Hello everyone, first post here:

I'm looking at possible moving into a place on the 500 block of the 13th in Pendleton. Looks like the area has had some bad crime a few years ago, but that things have since improved. Would it be a mistake to move in here? It would be my hope that I would be able to walk along 13th to get to Main and everything else. Is this naive?

Pendleton has a couple blocks of pretty seriously concentrated poverty. Being that Pendleton itself is not even a dozen blocks, this makes up more than a little of the area. However, where you are is not such a bad place to be. The Pendleton art center is right there, you have a number of artists and others who want a good location and fairly low rent, plus you are right next to downtown. All in all, not a bad combination.

The casino is coming in, like, as we speak, plus Pendleton is right next to downtown, plus the architecture in most of the district is amazing. For better or worse, the market is probably going to undo the more ""ghetto"" sections of Pendleton, but this also means that your rent will go up.

If you're used to cities, i think you'll be fine with Pendleton, or at least able to tell if the area is for you after a visit. If you're moving from a small town or all-things-new suburban environment, Pendleton may not be the best choice.

The 500 block of 13th street is pretty rough. I drive it every day. The actual adress of 500 East 13th Street is the corner on which apparently unoccupied males stand at all hours of day and night watching the traffic (or awaiting customers). 5 to 10 of these watchful men all of the time. And, 13th is a pathway for thugs from the east side of Pendleton to get to their thug pals and drug dealers at 13th and Race. A lot of crime occurs on 13th street. In the past year there was a fatal shooting at that very intersection. I am just 1 block north and two blocks west at 14th and Sycamore and all is wonderful here. No trouble. If you want to speak with me about the exacts of this, send me a private message with your phone number and I'll give you a call.

There are some pioneers on 13th in the 550-600 block or so and I am sure that you could walk 13th Street to get to Main without incident as long as you mind your own business. I just would not want to live there when you could live on 14th, Broadway, spring, etc. and still be in the same neighborhood at the same price but safer.
