I knew there was some reason those fat welfare moms and their obese welfare children act like animals. Lack of brain development. That is what has caused it. Too much fat in the diet and not enough . . . . uh . . . uh . . . what was it these tubbies don't get enough of again? Not enough McDonalds. That must be it. Give em another $200/mo and they can go to McDonalds for 10 more meals. That must be the problem. Too much fat in the welfare diet and not enough McDonalds.
From what I see, these people live on alcoholic sugar drinks, dorito type chips and blunt cigars with pot stuffed in the tip. The children live on chips from a bag and red pop. While I pick up about 100 pieces of food packaging from teh sidewalk every week, I can't recall ever picking up a vegetable or packaging for a vegetable other than from a french fry.

Hey, Wolden, my man... You're coming on needlessly belligerent and shrill towards several other posters such as restorationconsultant and Wilson513 who (like myself) are sick and tired of the billions of $$$ dumped into the welfare black-hole! Any time someone like ourselves criticizes what we see in this charade of entitlements doesn't automatically make us "hate-mongers" and our observations "hate-speech," okay? The "welfare-momma syndrome" (and that includes all the absentee daddies) simply has to go--and that means NOW. Yeah, innocent younsters are going to suffer by the draconian changes needed in the system, but the larger, tax-paying public can wait no longer--and they (WE) shouldn't have to. You a professional welfare-momma? Sorry 'bout your luck, baby--we're comin' for you!"
This thread is becoming more and more cantankerous, no let's put it another way downright nasty. Whenever you pit social justice against public rights this is likely to be the result. All I know is the various circumstances put into effect during the past 50/60 years to try and create a better circumstance for the poor have failed. Whether this is due to the fact a certain percentage of people are content to live on the system rather than improve themselves, or the obstacles they face overwhelm them, I am not in a position to judge. I just know the current system does not work. I also observe very few politicians have the guts or the fortitude to speak up and say what needs to be done to correct the situation, likely because they do not want to jeopardize their careers. It is likely the fact we have allowed politics to become a lifetime career rather than a part-time avocation which is responsible for much of our national problem.
Motorman,
I agree something has to be done and entitlement hasn't worked. Poverty is as entrenched now as 50 years ago! Nothing has worked. But if you read the posts above and can't see the loathing embedded in them, I suspect you have missed part of what's actually going on.
It is undeniably true that the last 30 years have seen a huge redistribution of wealth. But it isn't the case that this is all due to "all that money poured into those horrible welfare people" !
In fact, there has been a huge redistribution of wealth up into the most wealthy, the top 1%. This is a simple fact.
By picking an "easy target" ("those lazy poor people") and exaggerating it in the media, "someone" has set up a straw man that distracts a lot of people from seeing what's been going on.
The middle class has been decimated. Their real income has been flat for 30 years. Their pension plans are gone. Many of them lost jobs that were exported. There are 15-20 million people trying to get work that can't find it.
There are ~20 Million "working poor" in the country. They work 40, 50 or more hours a week but get paid such low wages that they are in poverty. This group is conveniently ignored and no one asks, "why can't they get paid more"?
So, go ahead and eliminate all welfare and food stamps, all medical care for the poor, all medicaid for the poor elderly (no one talks about the poor elderly either...no , its all about those "terrible mommas"). None of that will help the middle class much.
I not only have an income in the top 2-3%, but I also have two defined benefit pension plans. So none of it affects me currently. I feel bad for people my age who have no savings for retirement and no pension plans. I feel bad for people working hard all the time and getting nowhere.
And yes, I feel bad for the people mired in generations of hopeless poverty with no apparent way out. However, I have no solution for any of it. Going back to the conditions found in London in the 1830's does not seem reasonable to me.
London in the 1830's huh? Debtors prisons and folks dying in the street. Oh, sure that's just what we will have if one of those big fat welfare mommas has to get down on her hands and knees and scrub a floor someplace. Or, more likely, turn the switch on a machine she stands behind while it scrubs the floor for her. i want to puke every time I hear someone say, this doesn't affect me . . . but I would just like to change our whole way of life so that I don't feel so guilty about having two pensions. Barf!
Why should anyone have to work? Why have any negative results from getting addicted to drugs and having children out of wedlock or not supporting the ones one does have. Let's be Greece. That will make it all better. News for the uninformed: There are a lot poorer people in Greece than you can find in the US.

Can you hire her to scrub your floors?
Because I sure can't.
Where are all these unskilled, uneducated "welfare mommas" supposed to work, especially in an economy where the unemployment rate hovers between 8 and 9 percent? Who's going to watch their preschool children?
wolden... You seem to be a very appreciative and responsive person. Obviously the policies over the past 50/60 years toward the poor have not worked. Like you, I am not sure what will work. I just know the politicians have totally failed to come up with an answer. I pains me to think of the level of working poor we have in this country. And those below even this level bother me more.
It may be due to an environment where drug dealing, etc. is far easier than struggling for a job. Yes I do believe stopping the rewarding of unmarried having kids is a first step. Society has to draw a line somewhere.
But you see that is a very big part of the problem, the breakdown of society and its norms. We have to start somewhere. It will be painful to the children involved. But remove them from the environments perpetuating this cycle. Make them wards of the state, etc. Cut off the funds their deadbeat parents have relied upon, the whole nine yards. aid to dependent children, food stamps, the whole gamut.
I believe I am a compassionate person. But I also believe we need to reestablish some fundamental principles on what each individual needs to do to be part of our society.
Who will make the beds? Who will wash the clothes ? Oh my, what a quandry they find themselves in. How on Earth did that happen? Oh, I think they had repeated sex with persons unknown who didn't give a whit about their children. Who watches their children in Mexico, Nigeria, Dominican Republic? Oh, I forgot. This is the US. I watch (or pay someone) to watch the children.
They do such a good job of "watching" the children after all. We now have three generations of welfare breeders who have done nothing other than have sex with men who won't support them and "watch" the children. Most of these people do not have a lineal descendent who has had a job since the 1960's.
Has anyone here ever heard of personal responsibility?

KJBrill,
I basically agree with you. Nothing has worked, nothing has changed, and the politicians have failed to fix it.
I also agree that something radically probably should be tried along the lines of what you suggest. I think along the lines of required work to receive benefits. The idea of separating children from that noxious environment occurred to me, but it probably would not be legal in the long run. I think the criminal justice system needs to be revamped.
Most of all I think we need lots more jobs that pay decent wages. If there were available jobs that anyone could do, then it would be a lot easier to get people out of the bread line.

You may be picking up after the same people (person?) all of the time, so it may not be indicative of anything beyond who passes by all of the time. Be glad it's not vegetables. They rot.
