^ Honestly how would you know this? They paid for studies to have their restaurant there. No business go into business blindly.

Quite simply. Downtown Cincinnati is only going to support so many upscale steakhouses. Morton's is already near Fountain Square. Jeff Ruby has a number of locations spread around the city, and he obviously has a pulse on Cincinnati as a whole. Ruth's Chris is a national chain and willing to grant a franchise to anyone putting up the necessary money. Sure they did some business evaluation, but that is done all the time by businesses who fail. I am just saying either they or Morton's will not be open a year from now.

How is this too upscale for Downtown Cincinnati where people from the suburbs where you live sometimes visit for baseball, football, etc... Not to mention the people who live in the banks aren't just a bunch of riff raff.

I hate to be the one to break this to you, but based on personal experience, those market studies are not necessarily money you can take to the bank. Sometimes the methodology or execution are flawed, and sometimes the company doing the study spins the numbers enough to be able to tell the client what the client wants to hear. When the business goes under after a couple years, the market research company is long gone--or they can always point fingers and say the execution of the business was flawed. It's a win-win situation for them.

I don't know enough to predict--and I can't help but wonder if the casino will substantially increase the number of steak house customers downtown--but anyone with a functioning brain cell can figure out that if there's a glut of a single type of business, the weaker will be killed off.

Have you ever eaten in a Ruth's Chris? Plan on around $200 for 2. I don't think the people living at the Banks will consider it a weekly hangout.

I felt more significant was the announcement Boca is moving from Oakley to downtown in the former Maisonette/La Normandie building.

Boca to move into Maisonette space | Cincinnati.com | cincinnati.com

The building has 15,000 square feet on 3 levels. It is my understanding they intend to try and duplicate the way the Maisonette and La Normandie were set up, with the present top-dollar Boca occupying the Maisonette space and a not yet identified new banner occupying the La Normandie space. Announced intention is between the two to offer fare across the entire price point spectrum. Will be interesting to see if they can pull it off.

I do hope the new Boca succeeds downtown. The owner and chef should be familiar enough with Cincinnati to gauge his potential. The Maisonette attributed its downfall to there simply not being enough people drawn into the city in their price range, particularly on weekdays. Hopefully Boca has this figured out.

I will say fine dining is available in the suburbs, two examples being Jag's on Union Centre Boulevard in West Chester and Jeff Ruby's Carlo & Johnny in Montgomery. Of course Jeff Ruby has had his pulse on Cincinnati for a long time. His Precinct is still my favorite upscale steakhouse, simply due to consistency. I have never had a meal served there which was not prepared to what I requested. If I ask for medium rare, I get medium rare, not rare, not medium. If I ask for a large smothered baked potato, I get a large one with my requested sour cream, chives, shredded cheese, the whole nine yards. As I say, consistency.

I notice the Waterfront has remained closed, probably due to the cost of insurance on a floating restaurant. And the Mike Fink, I am not sure is even still moored in Cincinnati. These were two of our favorite destinations during my working career, back when they were two of the reasons to actually go to Cincinnati.

What have become national chains like Ruth's Chris and Mortons are simply not reasons to go into the City, because more than likely you will be disappointed with the result versus the cost. Let's hope Boca reverses that trend.

Okay, it's a list, apparently you're able to figure out how to link to the downtowncincinnati site. It's not a list of new restaurants, and there's no personal commentary. I'm sure someone as urbane and sophisticated as you are has some favorites and recommendations. May we have them, please?

Yes, and then the Full Fare list includes Jean-Robert's Table and a pizza joint. Very discriminatory and informative.
