also, northside. although to be fair to OTR, you can find places that are between an abandoned building and a newly condominium historic building. See Pendleton in particular.
I thought about the CUF area south of campus, but the OP specifically indicated that she doesn't want an area overrun with students, and Victor, Rohs, Chickasaw, Stratford, etc. are ground zero for non-university affiliated student housing. Otherwise I agree that fantastic deals can be had south of McMillan.

Default re where to live

I would vote for Clifton Gaslight. It isnt perfect, but it is not as overrun with students as some of the other areas of Clifton (There are 3 different sections of Clifton. I'm referring to the area north of Ludlow).
You can walk your dog in Burnett Woods I believe, if you have lived in DC it should not scare you as it is an urban park (some people would tun white with fear at the idea of venturing into Burnett woods!). We used ot ride our bikes in Burnett woods and never had any problems.

Clifton gaslight has some diversity, some crime, some restaurants, a fair number of people, not too dangerous, and you can get a nice apartment for 1000-1200.

If you work at UC it is a 2 minute commute from the Gaslight and you can bike there or even walk.

There are tons of interesting neighborhoods in Cincinnati all slightly different.

If you like south philly, Clifton gaslight is going to feel pretty suburban to you. I also feel like gaslght is much more grad student than young professional. As far as getting a feel for OtR, It's better to think of it as 5 seperate hoods, which it originally was. Significant development has happened in some parts and others are still largely abandoned. If nothing else it can provide for quite the surreal experience.
