Emotions, economy stymie development of Supper Club site | NKY.com | cincinnati.com

As if I needed to see this in the Enquirer to remember.
My class at Wyoming High School had its commencement ceremonies six days later. The "safe, chaperoned" post-graduation party would have been held there. It didn't make any difference that I'd had no intention of going. I joined everybody else in feeling that a pall had been cast over the elation of our last week of school. Fate had spared the lives of who knows how many of us, to say nothing of the lasting trauma if they'd made it out.
No one from my 'burb perished in the disaster, but the mother of a friend had been at the club and fortunately escaped without physical injury. Throughout the summer few conversations didn't touch upon what had happened. Cincinnati being the "small town" that it is, everybody knew somebody who was acquainted with someone who was there. The incident brought people together in the same way the tornado rampage of three years before had, and the Riverfront Coliseum catastrophe did two and a half years later.
Who else here goes back that far?

MrsM and I were there a week before with another couple. He was a fireman. During the dinner show, he said that if there was a fire, almost no one would make it out!!

Then, on the 29th, we were supposed to go back to Beverly Hills with another couple. The other guy and I really didn't want to see John Davidson and we were able to talk our wives into dinner elsewhere and back to our appartment for drinks and talk.

This was before cell phones and both of our parents thought that we were at BH. It wasn't until after the other couple left and we turned on the TV and saw what happened. Immediately called our folks and told them we were not there. They were getting ready to drive to KY and try to find us/ our remains since they hadn't heard from us and thought the worst.

The wife and I were there about two weeks before the fire. We often comment is was only timing which separated us. I hope the property is allowed to either sit vacant or landscaped as a park and memorial to those who perished.

My brother's girlfriend tried to get reservations for his birthday. They were filled to capacity. How fortunate they (we family members) were.
