ALL of Kentucky knows how to get stuff done. In the meantime, Cincinnati is bickering about what to do with that 10-year old vacant spot on the riverfront between the stadiums - all because a bunch of whiny crybabies don't want their view of the river blocked from downtown.
Ask yourself something.....why is it that outside of New York City, Cincinnati is the only major city in which it's tallest building predates WW2? Louisville is getting ready to start construction of it's new tallest - over 700' high - while Cincinnati has trouble getting some riverfront parking garages off the ground.

Hmm, I get your point, but buildings don't make a city...street level activity does. The reason Louisville's skyscraper boom is impressvie is more for the street level activity being added with a number of its projects, and the fact that Museum Plaza will have 60 something stories of luxury residential condos.
The reason I see so much potential in downtown Cincy (and yes even Over the Rhine) is that the architecture is so well preservered, and by that I mean it is still standing! Many cities tore this kind of stuff down in favor of light industry, crappy warehouses, and parking lots in the 60's and 70's. So, Cincy has that going for it, but it also has a lot more to clean up. For example, I was meeting a friend at Vinyl which is a really cool spot downtown on Sycamore but I got kinda lost and made it up to like 15th and Sycamore and I saw those 4 story tenement looking strucures with people hanging out the windows, a bonfire in a garbage can out front, and really poorly lit streets with children chasing each other all around them at 11 PM. On a plus sign, Fountain Square looks really nice at night save for the really agressive panhandlers (and I am used to living in downtown Louisville). The new neon 5/3 sign thingy is kind of cool and that Cadillac restaurant is cheesy but a sign of what downtown needs. The chain restauarants are nice liek the Brazilian Steakhouse and McCormick and Schmick's but I would like to see some more local flavor. It's like Cincy has a few very small pockets of vibrancy but they are so spread out it is not the most user friendly city if that makes sense? For example, Hyde Park Square is gorgeous and almost reminds me of a slice of Lincoln Park in Chicago, but where is the pedestrian activity? Where are the people walking dogs? Where are the locally owned coffee shops where people hang out at 10 PM or the dog parks where people go at night? The 24 hour cafes? The Meditteranean restaurants serving late night Hookah? I dunno, stuff like that is what I like in a city. Maybe I just have not found it yet, which is why I was asking you guys

Like I said, Cincinnati is not a progressively-minded place. Yes, it DOES have potential. But it gets wasted. The skyscraper reference was just an illustration of a point I was making about Cincinnati's lack of a bold risk-taking mentality. It's too scared to do anything bold, because the people in the area always balk at it. The city is just stuck in the past, and monotonously slow about things, which is why we lost the Aquarium to Newport, as well as the Hofbrauhaus. It's also why we have an empty hole on the riverfront that has been there for 10 years.

The best nightlife these days is downtown. A few new bars opened in the last year - Cadillac Ranch, Lodge Bar, Sully's, along with a new club - Bang - to add to the existing scene. Unfortunately I wouldn't be able to tell you which nights are the biggest (been married too long), but that is where I see the crowds these days.

This is one of the primary reasons why young people do not stay in Cincinnati, along with a shortage of significant job opportunities. I hope you will be able to enjoy one of the cultural food delights that you have mentioned before you depart from our city.

where do yall get this stuff? Where are you from? I swear, most of the people answering questions from outsiders are bashing the 'nati and are not even from the 'nati. Get a life - most of the people here are just fine with the "stagnant" "snail's pace" way of life and change. We are old school good ol' boys... live with it or move to Manhattan.
Alive One Tuesday night, Thursday Night Beer Sellar, Friday Arnie's / Hofbrauhaus.
Best Chili - Clifton Skyline / Zips with a Burger.
Don't TRASH the nati!

Thankyou CincyUK! I know a bunch of places just not the "nights" they get big! Louisville and other mid sized cities are similar in that you have to "know the scene" and what nights people go where! I tend to agree Cincy is a little dead, but thats because its more spread out I think.
Skyline is the best Chili? We have that in Louisville and I don't like it...

Cincinnati chili isn't really "chili", per se. It's more like a spicy beef soup mixture. It's an acquired taste. If you don't like Skyline, maybe try Gold Star instead. I personally like it a lot better than Skyline, and I'm a Cincinnati native who has lived in the area my entire life.

I will have to try that as I have never seen Gold Star in other cities where I lived.

It's still basically the same type of "chili". In Cincinnati, there tends to be a "this versus that" mentality about different things. For example, "West side versus east side" with respect to which side of the city is better. "Gold Star versus Skyline" with respect to the chili. You have those who are diehard fans of one or the other - but rarely both. I happen to like Gold Star because it's not as runny or bland as Skyline. But then, you also have Camp Washington Chili, as well as Empress. It's not surprising that you don't have a Gold Star Chili restaurant in Louisville. Cincinnati chili is a rather unique local specialty, and outside of the states of Ohio, Indiana, and Kentucky, even Skyline is rare - only being found in Florida. But Gold Star does have locations in Lexington, so maybe you could take a short jaunt sometime and hit one of the locations there.

Nope sorry, but Northside has come a long way in the nightlife department..I would rather be there than downtown.
