We are considering moving into an apartment on Ravine, near West McMicken Ave. Just wanting to find out a little more about the area and where the most convenient laundry mat would be?

From Ravine street, go up the hill to Warner and make a right. Go over to Clifton and Warner. There is a corner store, go a little up Warner past the entrance to the apartment building and the laundromat is on the right. The corner store, apartment building entrance and laundromat are all in the same building. Murphys Pub is across the street on Clifton. Also, across the street from the corner store is a green, boarded up store front. The corner store owner just purchased that building and is going to build a Hookah Cafe there.

Ok, it all depends where on Ravine you are moving. The neighborhood along McMicken as it intersects with Ravine is rough. Lot of prostitutes and druggies/dealers. By the time you hit lower Klotter it starts improving dramatically and only gets better as you go up Ravine towards Warner. I live in the neighborhood, so please feel free to message me.

Man you need to get with the times!

I throw mine away as soon as I find them on the porch.

Seriously, though. There is no way the laundromat I am giving directions to is listed in the phone book. The guy that owns the corner building (store, apartments, laundromat) has the building manager run the laundromat. There is no phone in there and never an attendant. Lionel just opens it before going to work and closes it before going to bed.

When I get frustrated at trying to find an address or telephone number online, the number of false leads and ads just make me more than a little agitated, I do find I am going back to the phone book. Yes, it is an antique, and yes costs will dictate its demise, but until then long live the phone book.

BTW - if you are going to college the UC shuttle has a stop at Warner and Ravine. Plus Ravine Street market has a decent beer selection, several shelf items, and a decent deli. It's not a real deli, but they make good sandwiches and such. The folks that own it are really cool too. It's family owned and managed.

Are you saying someone owns all those businesses and doesn't have a telephone?

In one of the buildings on the corner of Clifton and Warner there is one building with three things going on. A corner store, an apartment building entrance, and a laundromat. One person owns the entire building named Pete. He rents the corner store to someone who runs his own affairs out of the store and has nothing more to do with Pete. Pete rents out the apartment building and runs the laundromat. Pete hires Lionel (who lives in the apartment building) to manage the apartments and open and close the laundromat. So the laundromat does not have a phone and has no attendant. Capiche?

Sounds like the laundromat is a part of the apartment complex but others are allowed to come in and use it, in which case there might be a telephone number with a double or triple listing: the apartments, the laundromat and the owner.

Oh, and I ran the search through Yahoo just to see if anything at all would come up, as I've seen them called "laundry mat" before -- and wondered where any born and bred American people calling it such found a mat in such places.

The laundromat is not part of the apartment building. It's is totally open to the public and is one of the only laundromats in the neighborhood. There is no telephone. And I tell you what, genius, get out your phone book and prove me wrong.
