General Rant on Local Irritating Subjects (Cincinnati, Dayton: purchase, quality of life, airport)

In keeping with the moderator's request this subject not occupy valuable space in the Development Thread, I am starting this new thread for ranting on the Interstate Highway System or even just roads in general.

I will just start it off by declaring I believe the Interstate Highway System is one of the greatest endeavors this country ever achieved. It is the backbone of commerce in this country, to this day. Without it our daily quality of life would be greatly diminished.

Look around you, every automotive manufacturer in the world aims at our market, and many actually come here and build plants to build their cars/trucks, etc. They would not give us a second look if not for the Interstate Highway System. It permits them to distribute their product in the US and provides the customers to purchase it.

OK, naysayers, let's hear the rebuttal how it is just one big conspiracy of the auto and oil industries.

That has been what my life has been like during my several years of hell in the KC area.

Highways are still a vital mode of moving goods and services as already pointed out. I suspect that once we perfect some kind of local airfoil travel that has vehicles that hover above ground and can move people and goods around, we'll have highways.

What happens if there is a power failure in the middle of it? Do you just float around as some sort of particles in the cosmos somewhere? And once transported do you end up like reconstituted orange juice, similar to but not quite like the original.

The interestate system is Socialist!!!. It was built by the Government!!!!. And its free!!!!

It was cooked up during that evil New Deal (boo! hiss!) and was originally called the Interregional Higway System, and might not have been intended to be truley limited access.

The Ohio Department of Roads or whatever that predecessor of ODOT was called was already planning parts of this in the early 1940s, and the first stretches of a "US 25 Expressway" were built during WWII..

..in Cincinnati! From I think Paddock Road to the big aircraft engine factory north of Lockland & Reading. A part still exists as the well-known underpass in Lockland. That highway was limited access but not divided, as that stretch was two-way traffic (the current southbound lanes of I-75).

Another stretch was build north of Dayton to the airport in Vandalia, with a traffic circle instead of an interchange at the southern end and the start of an interchange on the northern end, at US 40 (they had southbound entrance and eastbound-to-US 40 exit ramps, but a light at the very end).

There things sat until the Interstate Highway Act in the 1950 provided the money to build a true expressway system. US 25 disappeared and became I-75.
