Major League Baseball commish Bud Selig was in town today to award a coveted All Star Game to Cincinnati and Great American Ball Park in July 2015. It's a huge deal and will focus a week's worth of the national spotlight on the city, and all that's great about it. It's also projected to bring between $80 million and $100 million in out-of-town dollars to Cincinnati and the Tri-state.

By 2015:

- The Banks second phase will be completed and filled, including even more shops, restaurants and a new hotel

- Smale Riverfront Park will be extended west of the Suspension Bridge and completely link to Sawyer Point (this work is being done now)

- the dunnhumby USA headquarters at Fifth and Race will be completed and filled

- the old Enquirer Building will be a pair of new hotels and the Hyatt will be completely renovated

- the casino will be up and running

- OTR development will be 2.5 years further along, with a completed Mercer Commons adding hundreds of new people to the neighborhood

- the long-vacant historic buildings at Third and Main will be renovated and filled with residences/ground retail

- Usquare at UC will be fully up and running, with lots of new shops and restaurants.

- Rookwood will be filled out, and the new Center of Cincinnati development (including movie theater, shops, restaurants) will be as well

By 2015, these could be completed:

- the streetcar between The Banks and Findlay Market (I'm betting that the ASG kick starts efforts to get this done by mid-2015 as opposed to 2016

- hundreds of new residences above Macy's at Fountain Place

- a new Holiday Inn tower in the Seventh and Sycamore area

Wish list for 2015:

- something meaningful in the Tower Place Mall space

- caps over FWW (unlikely this could happen so soon)

- another airline or two serving CVG (Delta doesn't deserve to price-gouge this event)

I just watched a report on WLWT that said the money from this event will almost all come from outside the local economy! That's going to be a big infusion to Cincinnati's businesses.

It's certainly a very valid reason to put the entire project into hyper-drive!

Why is everyone gushing that MLB finally granted Cincy an ASG? And 2015, that is 3 games away. Where have we been up to now?

If the venerable Mr Selig were to follow this up by declaring Pete Rose to be eligible for the hall of fame in 2015, we might really have something to celebrate.

The last time the All Star game was in town was in 1988. Back then it was just about the game. Nowadays there are festivals, home run derbys, and meet and greets. It will keep visitors in town for more than one night of baseball. More time spent = better for the city.

Well, the world could end before July 2015, but then we wouldn't know the difference.

So until then ... rock on!

There are 30 teams, and it will have been 27 years since Cincinnati last hosted the game. They probably do this on a rotating basis for the most part.
