Withrow HS has canceled their prom because of a water balloon fight. I feel bad for the kids. ... As senior pranks go, this one was pretty tame.

I believe the Principal was a little harsh in this decision. I understand there has to be a measure of decorum. But to cancel the Prom seems to me to penalize students which may have not participated in the water prank. To make others suffer for the actions of some I do not feel is right.

Especially considering that far worse weapons than water balloons are probably carried at Withrow these days.
But I'm sure the kids will work out an alternative.

If I were still in HS and could choose between a cafeteria water balloon fight or spending a couple hundred dollars on some stupid dance, I'd take the water balloon fight too.

That's ridiculous. A water balloon fight is hardly the worst thing that can happen in an urban high school. Heaven forbid kids should have fun ...

Really? What proof do you have?

This isn't fair at all. The awful plague of school shootings that has horrified this nation in recent years isn't really an urban one.

Puh-leeez, name one urban "non-exam" high school where kids aren't packing heat now. Not every one of the kids, to be sure, but there are plenty of pointless rivalries between the 'hoods that lead to shootings and to teens arming themselves for "self defense." Chicago, Detroit, Miami, Los Angeles, etc aren't alone. Do you really think the "resource officers" are there to prevent kids from cutting classes? Do you really think the student body at Withrow is a reflection of the community where it's situated? Or that the juvies who get themselves in the media for street robberies on Madison Rd after classes are from Hyde Park?
All the more reason to decry the principal's decision to scrub the prom over some harmless fun that could just as easily have been perpetrated at any school anywhere. One can only hope that she doesn't go on to expel the "ringleaders." That once happened a generation ago after some 12th-graders carried out a conspiracy to hit a teacher in the face with a pie. In that case the horrid sinister plot was hatched at the blackboard jungle known as Saint X.

Bring up Chicago, Miami, Detroit and Los Angeles all you want. I'll point to Columbine, Sandy Hook, Chardon, Virginia Tech, etc. ... not exactly "the hood," those places, are they?

Yeah, I think American high schools, in general, are not the refuges from a dangerous world that we'd like them to be. Suburban, urban, and rural schools all have some degree of weapons, drugs, teen preganancies, etc. I think we can all agree that cancelling the prom because of a water balloon fight would seem draconian even in the 1950's.

Is there something more to the story that we're missing here?
