I am trying to remember the name of a novel I read about thirty years ago , set in Cincy. i think it was set in the 1950's and had the themes of corporate culture, segregation etc. The main character was a women who was obsessed with upward mobility and her husband's furture in the company. The author must have been from the area as she wrote with such detail. There was much had wringing about living in the right area and shopping at the right stores. It was written in the samevein as Ann Tyler writing about the Baltimore area. Does anyone know of this book ?

Email the public library. I'm sure they can help you find that and probably some others. It's one of the country's top libraries in something I never got straight, and it's quite extensive.

Default Thanks for the list

I don't think it is on that list but I do want to Read the Joy Fielding one.

In the novel I am thinking about was very dark, but I read it when I was about 22 and newly married, so what did I know. It covered several decades. The main character seemed ashamed of her German parents, who could barely speak English. Later she obsesses about how to sign the Christmas card to the boss. Also, she feeds her husband casseoles for a month to see if he notices, and he doesn't. She saved the money she saved at from the butcher for herself. There was one part about her dating her boyfriend who was in a higher social class. I got the distinct impression hubby worked for a big corporation and she was more obsessed with his climb that was he It was a sobering read for a newlywed. Company cocktail parties were described in detail and they go to the bosses house at Christmas where she is astounded by the house.

i remember thinking how the author must have grown up in the city to have such detail and insight. At some point, it seeems if the wife is having a breakdown, she becomes so obsessive.

Any of this sound familiar ?

Default read by ladies now over 50

I read this elusive book about thirty years ago so, I think women in your lives , who are at least 50 today, might be a source of possible info on this book. Would you please ask the women in your lives in that age bracket.
