We are thinking of buying a home in Columbia-Tusculum. We currently have a five month old, so we are checking out the schools in the area to see what would be best when he needs to go to kindergarten. The assigned elementary school is Riverview East Academy. Is this a good school? What about Sands Montessori? Are magnet schools difficult to get into? We would rather not send him to a private Catholic school as neither one of us are Catholic. Any and all suggestions appreciated. Thank you!

Sands is good, Kilgour has a good reputation and is nearby.

This is an over and over refrain. We have seen a house and want to live in the City. But we have a concern about the schools. When is CPS going to reverse their reputation and be recognized as a top achieving school district? This is without a doubt the biggest thing which could happen to the City of Cincinnati - overreaching such things as OTR. So when is it going to happen?

I can't say for your particular school, but CPS has many excellent options. Feel free to direct message me and I can hopefully be helpful. I have a child in SCPA, and researched MANY, MANY schools in the selection process. You aren't bound to your neighborhood school, so if you don't like it, or are attracted to a particular magnet school then you have options.

And I am sure the OP has such reassurances from those who have chimed in to tell them we have personal experiences with the schools in Columbia-Tusculum and you will be just fine. No private schools required.

I seem to recall reading that Riverview East was not one of the better rated schools. As others have said, though, you have some options within CPS assuming you're willing to go through the process.

To quote Sarah Perry, because she makes a good point.

The process can vary depending on the school. You can also choose other neighborhood schools that suit your tastes and enroll them there if the school does not fill with kids from the neighborhood. This is pretty common. Magnet schools are not difficult to get into but you have to want to get them in there and put forth effort to do what you need to. This is foreign to some in the area where you can just send your kid to school in your local small community and feel good about things. Personally, I found CPS easy to deal with, but I have dealt with NYC and LA school districts. Basically, what I learned is closed mouths don't get fed, and the same applies to a lesser degree here in Cincy. I know a lot of families who have their kids in CPS and are very happy with the results. As I said, direct message me and I can get more specific.

Sands Montessori is an excellent school and is in very high demand. Also, check out North Avondale Montessori, but coming from the east side I think you would choose Sands.
