Hi I'm wondering if anybody may be able to help me. I currently live in Columbus IN and my family is flying into Cincinnati in August and spending a couple of days there before coming to stay with us. I'm looking for some advice on hotels, not in the Downtown area that will have amenities on hand. My family will be without transport for the first 24 hours (until we arrive) so looking for somewhere that has shops/restaurants within walking distance. Any help or advice would be appreciated as we've only been in the US for 8 months and have not yet had the opportunity of discovering what Cincinnati has to offer.

Thanks in advance.

Covington, maybe?

Unless that's too close to downtown for you. But where else will you be within walking distance of restaurants, etc.? And you must consider transportation for your family from the airport to their hotel. It's easy to get a cab or airport limo to Covington.

Yes I did

Ohiogirl 81 - they will get a cab from the airport but will have just over 24 hours to kill on their own until we arrive. I shall look into that, thank you.

So I finally got to see your actual post. You say you have only been in the US for 8 months, but did not indicate the level of English comfort. I expect yours is good, but do not know about your family as you did not divulge your origin.

I spent a lot of time in Columbus, Indiana during my working career, a small city I thoroughly enjoyed. My suggestion is somewhat unusual and depends on what kind of experiences you want the family to have. If by family you mean your parents, my suggestion is contact a limo/cab service and have them transported from the Cincinnati airport, CVG, which is where I assume they will be arriving to the casino/hotel/resort in Lawrenceburg Indiana. Since its big attraction is gambling, which hopefully they will not over indulge in, the room rates, etc. are not substantially above a downtown Cincy hotel. But it has considerable amenities. It is a one-stop experience. If you will be coming from Columbus, it is a quick shot from I-74 down to Lawrenceburg. If you will be arriving within 24 hrs, it is quick tour if you desire to tour downtown Cincinnati so they have more experience.

Not that it makes any difference, but does your involvement in Columbus have anything to do with Cummins Engine? Let's face it, they are the 24LB gorilla in town, as they very well deserve to be.

What is the reason for not wanting to stay Downtown? It's the best place to stay if you want to have "the opportunity of discovering what Cincinnati has to offer."

There are hotels by the university with shops and restaurants within walking distance, but I think that would be a poor substitute for staying Downtown.

Here is a possibility. It's not in the most tourist-friendly area, but it has things to do within walking distance:
Hotels in Cincinnati Ohio - Hotels Near University of Cincinnati - Hampton Inn

I highly encourage you to stay downtown; the quality of your experience will take a significant hit otherwise. Garfield Suites is a decent, affordable option. If you insist on not staying downtown, then you might want to look at bed & breakfast options, as they might be more likely to be in walkable areas.

Here are a couple B&B's you might consider:
The Clifton House | Bed & Breakfast | Cincinnati, OH
Newport (Cincinnati area), Kentucky
326 East 6th Street
(859) 581-6447
(888) 891-7500 Bed and Breakfast Inn - Gateway Bed & Breakfast - Newport Lodging - Introduction

Not sure why you assume people from outside the US are unlikely to have familiarity with English. UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, India, Singapore, Netherlands, Iceland, Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, and other countries have English either as a first language or English is common enough as a second language that you might as well consider it a second first language.

And if they were truely comfortable with it, they would noy be asking for advice from an internet site.

So you double-down on the baseless assumption that OP is a nonnative English speaker.

It doesn't take a nonnative English speaker to treat the members on this forum as their own personal Googlers / Mechanical Turks.

The word is 'truly', by the way. OP probably could have told you that.

Back on topic, would your family like to spend that 24 hours just relaxing rather than running all over the place?

There is an adorable Bed and Breakfast just a few miles from the airport. We stayed there once and enjoyed it tremendously. I'm sure there are others in the area.

Cincinnati Bed and Breakfast, Northern Ky B&B, Kentucky Lodging
