Good residential areas in and around cincinnati (Hamilton, Green: best cities, houses)

We will be moving to Cincinnati shortly. Our work area will be near Cincinnati children's Hospital. We wish to buy a house in a good residential area which is secure, good neighborhood and good schools. (even if its 20 - 30 minutes away from work place is fine.) We are looking for a house any where in the range of 200,000 to 450,000. We are totally new to Ohio and were looking for some suggestions. Appreciate your help

gaslight clifton would work for you. good values for the money, really close to the hospital. cincinnati public school in the area is fairview german language school which is very good, walnut hills is one of the best high schools in the region and SCPA is also good.

You might want to lok at the neighborhoods of Glendale or Wyoming, to the north of the city. Both are older communities, with large homes, big yards with lots of trees and a real community feel. Both offer more house/land for the money than comparable neighborhoods closer to the city (Hyde Park), and you can find very nice houses in your price range.

Wyoming had better schools, although I've gone on record for supporting the Princeton City School district, which is a large district with a diverse population and lots of opportunities for focussed students at the higher performance end (Princeton offers International Baccalaureate and strong foreign language, art and music programs). Wyoming has an additional tax to cover their education system, which makes the price of living there higher.

You can check out Glendale on The Village of Glendale, Ohio. Commute time to Children's hospital from both is around 30-40 minutes down I-75.

I don't know much about the "clifton gaslight" area that jlrosen mentioned. But I used to teach for Cincinnati Public Schools and unless things have changed, the schools mentioned are considered magnet schools and require special sign-ups or tests and try-outs depending on the school. And you probably do not want to end up in the "neighborhood" school for the area. So make sure you check into the admission policies.

neighborhood school is rockdale, and any students going there are voucher eligible, so they can go anywhere

Best place to raise a family in Cincinnati. Schools are excellent. The Village is very safe (rated safest in Cincy). Bus access into downtown if needed. The Village of Terrace Park rates #1 as best place to live in the Cincinnati area in the local survey.

Hi, Montgomery and Blue Ash are very nice locations, they're convenient to all of the interstates, they have abundant and nicely maintained parks (I live within walking distance of two parks and a nature preserve.), nice recreational facilities, and the Sycamore school district is excellent, but houses can be a bit pricey. Blue Ash was listed as one of the best cities in America to raise a family a while back and it truly is a wonderful, walkable community. They have the annual Taste of Blue Ash, a gigantic Fourth of July celebration with big name musicians, their own symphony orchestra, free concerts, and a wonderful recreation center.

West Chester and Mason have newer houses, better home prices, and very good schools. They are both growing communities and there have been issues with overcrowding in their schools. West Chester for instance is Lakota school district and they now have two high schools Lakota East and Lakota West. The last time I checked they were one of the biggest school districts in the state. Both of these communities are outside of the I-275, so your commute to downtown would be longer.

Mariemont/Terrace Park is a great community with excellent schools. It's charming, walkable, and quaint. Your communte to Children's Hospital wouldn't be bad either because it's inside the I-275 beltway. It can be pricey though.

Loveland is a beautiful community with schools that are excellent. They are best known for their bike trail, which is amazing, and runs through their quaint historic district, the canoeing on the Little Miami River, the skate park, and the Loveland Castle (not to be confused with Castle Skateland where people roller skate) which was built by one man. Homes in Loveland are reasonably priced and it's a nice, safe place to raise your kids.

There are a lot of wonderful, safe, friendly communities in this area. I know you'll find your spot and love it. It's a great place to raise a family, get an education, work, play, and live.

Make a point of trying Skyline chili (go for a three way and a cheese coney to start with - No, I'm not pulling your leg about the three way - it's weird, but good), LaRosa's pizza, Graeter's ice cream, and Montgomery Inn ribs - they are Cincinnati's signature foods. I would say Mariemont, Wyoming, Clifton gaslight or even Green Twp. All have excellent schooling options, within Hamilton County, and are also not in the major traffic snarls that plague many of these other communities (ie Mason, West Chester, Liberty Twp). Good luck.

Mariemont / Terrace Park are probably your best / safest bet as far as suburbs go. The towns are perfect, the schools are small, and the easiest traffic in town goes east on Rt 50 / Columbia Parkway. Homes in the Mariemont School District sell briskly even in down markets.

Probably the worst traffic in town goes North - South on 71 and 75 (north of 562 for both). So while Wyoming and Glendale are nice areas, you might not be well served living all the way up there.

Private schools are big here too, so you might want to consider buying something closer to 200-300K in the city and then weigh the cost of tuition at Country Day or Seven Hills (private Catholic schools are also big here). You can get great houses in town for under 300K EASY. I would even go as far to say you can get great houses for under 200K rather easily.
