My son is currently in the 6th grade in private catholic school that goes to8th grade. I was talking to his teacher last week in conferences and she saidit's not too early to be looking at high schools. Is she right? I have a few Iwould like to look at Moeller, St Xavier maybe Purcell. My son has playedfootball since age 5 and he's about 5'5 and not even 12 yet. So I'm trying toget him into basketball. Which by the way does anyone know any good basketballprograms? I thought about Friars Club since lot of his teammates play for them.

I live in Columbia Township which is between Madisonville and Silverton. Iwould like him to go to a good school that will help him get into a greatcollege. Right now he keeps saying Alabama or Oregon which are great schoolsfor education and sports.

Anyone else faced with this challenge? Parents of private schools what doyou like and dislike? Especially those in all boys’ schools your opinion isneeded . Few years ago for two years his class was all boys and he didexcellent.

Kids usually have an idea of where they want to go to high school by sixth grade, but if they don't, which I assume is your case, then personally I would say it's too early. Things don't really get moving until after the high school placement test that's in November of seventh grade year. I decided to go to Elder, but that's too far of a drive for you. Personally I'd go to Moeller if given the three choices you mentioned. Very good sports teams and of course a great educational place.

LaStar00 ...

You may be a little premature. But it never hurts to be ahead of the game. If it was me I would pick Moeller. Close, able to get to, and maybe they would sponsor him. I say get the best deal you can get and go with it.

i would worry more about the academic side of things and worry less about the athletic. plus when i was his age i wanted to go Florida simply b/c the gators football unis looked cool and they were winning national titles in football back in the mid 90s. not exactly good reasons to pick a school haha. sounds like your son is fixated more on the fact that both schools are on tv for football weekly and less on if they are actually good schools.

plus on top of it you never know how he'll grow to be honest. i was 5'8 / 180 lbs. as an 8th grader and was 5'8 / 190 lbs as a senior high school. i peaked at age 13/14. i went from thinking i might have a D2 career somewhere to not even getting a sniff from D3 schools who will take anyone haha. when i was born the doctor told my dad i was projected to be 6'7 so my dad bought me one of those nerf basketball hoops at a VERY young age and had me play with it. good investment at the time haha but 6'7 i did not become.

I have a 6th grader, and it's definitely not too early to be looking. At least hit the open houses. Also consider the smaller schools. An athlete that rides the bench at Big Moe could be a star elsewhere. Is a Catholic HS education a priority? If not, CHCA, Cincinnati Country Day and Seven Hills might be worth a look.

Friars Club produces some impressive basketball players, but your son might find himself playing catch up. The kids his age have been playing hard core basketball for several years now. Does his home school have a CYO team?
