I lived in Cincy almost 10 years ago now. Back then, over the rhine was a cesspool. On 2 recent visits, I was impressed with the gentrification in OTR.

However, I am booked to stay near Hopkins Park, just east of the heart of OTR, on Bigelow St. What is the safety of that area? Especially at night? Should I worry about rental car break ins?

If the area is ok, is it safe to walk to a cafe or shop in OTR from Hopkins Park?

Hopkins Park is actually in Mt Auburn and is surrounded by a pretty mixed neighborhood. I wouldn't be worried about your car there any more than anywhere else in the city. The area immediately surrounding the park and Prospect Hill to the South is actually one of the best neighborhoods in the city (in my opinion). One thing that is important to understand is the difference a block makes in the city. While you're in Mt Auburn, I don't think you'd have any problem walking at night between your hotel and Over-the-Rhine, however, crossing West of Sycamore St can get a little dicey at night. I walk there regularly, but I wouldn't recommend it for everybody.

Sure, just head down Sycamore. Avoid Sycamore around Ziegler Park, that's a hot spot. IMO, the best thing to do is head over to Main, or down Vine. Also, you will pass Milton's Prospect Hill Tavern on Sycamore. Stop in for a few drinks. Very friendly, diverse crowd there. Cheers!

I remember that spot....reminds me a whole lot of Mag Bar in Louisville, and that is a good thing. I guess the area is probably similar to Old Louisville but maybe a bit more dicey.

Well, Sycamore Street above Liberty is sort of the dividing line between some serious hood and Propsect Hill, which is one of the better (if not the best) downtown neighborhoods. That changes the further up Sycamore you go, really, beginning with Mulberry Street. Seittz (Seitz is mostly empty), Goethe, and Dorsey are decent, with Dorsey probably being the best street. Prospect Hill has multimillion dollar homes further up the hill. But none of it is dicey any longer, but cross sycamore down Schiller and you are in the thick of it. Milton's is primarily a Prospect Hill neighborhood bar. However, you never know who will show up there. I was there not too long ago when Old Crow Medicine Show popped in. Enjoy your stay.
