Cool Neighborhoods around U. Cincy?
I'm looking at UC's grad programs and wondering if there is a 'cool' neighborhood in the vicinity. I'm talking bars, nightlife, culture, shops and lots of 20somethings.
Something like Louisville's Highlands, Pittsburgh's Southside, or Cleveland's Lakewood
many thanks

I lived in Cincinnati this summer in Mt. Adams. It's beautiful and overlooks the city and has lots of bars and nightlife but is still small so not a lot of traffic, etc. It is about 20 min. away from UC though.
Clifton, where UC is, has a lot of bars and stuff too though. Also Mt. Lookout, but I think it's even further away. Just don't live downtown; it's dead.

No, this is Cincinnasti "The Anti-Fun Town."
The closest thing to a Chicago/New York neighborhood is the gaslight district in Clifton down on Ludlow/Jefferson. It's all self-contained with a movie theater, non-corporate coffee bars, lots of restaurants but no boring and unsightly corporate box-cookie cutter restaurants, dry cleaners, grocery, clothing shops, wine shops and other things. The whole ambiance is marred by the ghastly presence of a corporate CVS pharmacy, but if you can over-look that, it isn't too bad. There's only one bar, Arlen's. I never go there.
Stay away from the east-side of campus, as it's HUD housing, unless you have a death wish or enjoy having a gun shoved in your face and your money taken. The university is real good about sending out e-mails on off-campus crime, but they're after the fact.
I live on the south-side, it's okay, but not what you're looking for. No one has any money here, so partying is not "the in-thing" to do, especially since nearly everyone lives with their parents or with someone, because they don't have any money.

There is also Olives which is open quite late, plus you've got the always great Sitwells Coffee Shop.

I don't believe I've ever heard anyone describe that part of Uptown in that way. Maybe you have missed some of the major new developments that have taken place in that specific area (ie Stetson Square, Charlton Place, etc).

You must hang out with different crowds than myself or others that I know. BTW, close to 80% of this years freshman class at UC live on campus...this is pushing more and more upper-classmen to live in the surrounding neighborhoods. New developments like University Park Apartments, Stratford Heights and McMillan Manor are all at capacity.
As for a recommendation I would go with either Clifton Gaslight, Northside or Downtown. If you want to go a little further from campus then try Mt. Lookout, Mt. Adams or Hyde Park.
