Hi,
I am moving to Cincinnati in July for a job with the Children's Hospital. I've arranged for an apartment nearby, but it is not available until August. Therefore, I will need to find alternate, affordable, housing for 4 weeks until the apartment is available. It will need to be either within walking distance or along a bus line. Does anyone know of anything with reasonable weekly rates?

Thank you in advance.

In case Residence Inn doesn't meet your definition of affordable, and assuming you asked the Human Resources people at Children's already, I suggest you ask the Ronald McDonald House that serves Children's if they can recommend something. It would seem to me that they might have need for nearby overflow temporary housing from time to time, and might maintain a list.

I took a look at the newer Hampton Inn on Vine St. close to Children's. Definitely convenient and walkable. Then I looked at the room rate. I don't think the OP is planning on spending $4,500 for a month's temporary lodging.

We had some out of town projects where the installation and final acceptance took the biggest part of a year.

Our Project Manager, a friend of mine, became quite good at negotiating rates.

In one case he got a Ramada Inn to provide us rooms at about 60% of their normal rate and even equip the rooms with work tables, microwave, and mini-fridge. We went home on weekends and just left all our stuff in the room, it was a 7-day a week deal. We liked that because they had one of the best restaurants in town.

In another case he got an apartment complex to rent us apartments, furnish them with rental furniture, and provide a cleaning service. That was another nice deal since we were there over the summer and they had a large outdoor pool which we used a lot.

The answer to this may depend on what you can afford and how comfortable you are living alongside poverty, and the drawbacks that go with that. As a blighted neighborhood, Avondale would have several weekly rental options that would be very cheap compared to downtown or Clifton's more upscale options. As a middle ground, however, I'd suggest the Quality Inn in Norwood, it has very easy access to Children's via the MetroPlus bus or Rte. #4.

^ Your middle ground suggestion of Quality Inn/Norwood is a good one that I hope the OP checks out. And let's add that the Metro*Plus express buses stop on Montgomery Rd. @ both Linden Point and Surrey Square while the #51 buses stop at Montgomery Rd. @ both Sherman Ave and at Surrey Square. Both these bus routes run frequently and will provide quick access directly to Children's Hospital.

Thank you, everyone, for all of the suggestions. This is very helpful. I'm not really concerned about being near, or within, low income areas. That is, as long as the area is relatively safe. I'm used to being in cities like Detroit, so I'm not immediately turned off by, or afraid of, signs of poverty or city blight. It's a short term stay, so convenience and price are my biggest considerations here.

Thanks again for the pointers.

Well. It looks like I'm back to the drawing board on this. The Quality hotel in Norwood suggested above was apparently closed by the police for drug and prostitution activity. Police close Quality Hotel in Norwood for drugs, prostitution - Cincinnati News, FOX19-WXIX TV

Thanks for the pointers though.

Ouch. Your next best options for cheap hotels are the Days Inn on Ridge Ave (you can take bus 41 and transfer to the Metro+ or just walk half a mile to the transfer point, either way it takes about 40 minutes from there to Children's) or the Travelodge in Newport, KY (you'd have to walk across the nearby bridge to access Cincy busses. Both are a bit less convenient for your commute, but will be in the same price range. There's also a Motel 6 near the Days Inn. In Avondale, around the Harriet Beecher Stowe House there are some cheap apartments that are in a bit more stable part of the neighborhood than the more crime ridden section on the other side of the 71 freeway, but I don't have any phone numbers to give you to see if they take weekly rentals.
