Hi all,

We are a British family, moved to Ohio 2 years ago and currently living near Canton. My husband is a University professor and considering a move to Cincinnati.
We have a teenage son who would attend the university, and a daughter who would likely stay where we are currently.
We live in a rural area, and my husband would like similar if we were to move, how far away are rural areas from the university?
Is it reasonable to live in NKY and commute?
What are the best areas to look at for housing within around 30 minutes of the university?

Any responses would be gratefully received

You have quite a few options, including Northern Kentucky, but I would suggest looking west of Cincinnati in the direction of Harrison, Ohio or southeast Indiana. If you select a home reasonably close to Interstate 74, going east it intersects with Interstate 75 just a few miles and minutes away from the area of the University. I believe this would be within your desired commute time.

I'll +1

To expand on that, I would avoid Colerain Twp and be very careful where you look around Crosby Twp. and Ross Twp in Butler Co. You have a couple of big land mines, including the massive Mt. Rumpke trash dump and Fernald, a former nuclear waste site.

But that's Colerain. West of there, north of there is great for the lifestyle you want, and it's hard to beat I-74 in Ohio if you're into interstate aesthetics.

Good luck!

Land mines were prohibited as part of the anti-personnel mine ban convention outlined in the Ottawa Treaty. :-)

But other than that, I agree. There are some very nice places in Ross township, though. Just don't buy sight unseen. The whole area west to the Indiana border (and over it) is quite nice, rural and convenient.

Is the OP not concerned with the educational quality of secondary schools in "rural" areas? In many places (including Ohio) you have to go with a suburban system for the highest-ranked academics, by and large.
Also - it's interesting to note that nobody has suggested outer Warren and Clermont Counties, or Brown County (all in SW Ohio) yet. Is it solely because the prevalent commute time might exceed a half-hour?

My son would attend the University, I am not concerned about the quality of schools, I am an intervention specialist so will be looking for work myself around the area.

Always very open to suggestions of areas, I would love somewhere with a small town feel close by.

Thanks as always for your responses

Theoretically, Fernald is cleaned up. It's now a nature preserve:Fernald Nature Preserve | Audubon Society of Ohio

On the other hand, Mt Rumke is a dump. Sometimes, it's really fragrant downwind.

Hahahaha wow, I was asleep at the wheel there, nice catch!

But yeah, I think I meant to type landfills. My Rumpke is the big one, by far, and then there's a construction product dump a mile or two from it and waste from the quarries you mention.

@goyguy - I purposefully did not recommend either because the commute would be 45 min minimum. Warren county is developed almost out to Blanchester now, and land prices are very high in the entire county. Clermont Co has no good way to get there - you'd have to rely on Columbia Parkway everyday, which IMO is a bad idea. And with NKY you have to deal with downtown traffic and bridges, which will be a real nightmare if Brent Spence is ever replaced.

Also - about rural schools- being a grad of one and a former student of a large well respected district in the area here, I can say rural districts can do loops around suburban ones in terms of quality of done right. The paths to opportunities may not be as clear, but anything is possible. For instance I did more AP exams in a rural district with one formal AP class than most of my friends in the rich suburban district and left with more college credit because I studied for the exams on my own. While I was doing that I also did two sports and put a decent amount of time into half a dozen school sponsored extracurriculars. My friends on the other hand were only able to commit to one extracurricular or sport.
