interesting article, but i counted 9 homicides in los angeles county between may 25-june1. los angeles county is by far the most populous county in the usa with 9.8 million people. oakland is by far the most dangerous in cali.. i would take my chances in LA over detroit, oakland or cincy as far as murder rates go.

Ooops. I guess there were only 9 murders in the six days reported in laid back LA.

Anyone who would rather live in LA than Cincinnati needs to have their head examined.

I just moved to Northern Kentucky and really like it--and am only one mile from Downtown Cincy--but if I had an opportunity to move to Los Angeles I would in a heartbeat. Just my $.02.

The anecdotal evidence is great, however the best way is to judge by hard numbers, over a period of time. Generally, Cincinnati is not ranked extremely high, and has never been ranked worse than 18th most dangerous. Here are the 2008 results based on FBI stats:
25 Most Dangerous Cities
1)New Orleans
2)Camden, NJ
3)Detroit
4)St. Louis
5)Oakland
6)Flint
7)Gary
8)Birmingham, AL
9)Richmond, CA
10)North Charleston, SC
11)Cleveland, OH
12)Baltimore
13)Miami Gardens, FL
14)Memphis
15)Youngstown, OH
16)Atlanta
17)Compton, CA
18)Orlando
19)Little Rock, AR
20)Minneapolis
21)Washington, DC
22)Philadelphia
23)Jackson, MS
24)Newark, NJ
25)Milwaukee

Hartwell a great neighborhood?, Ask Andy the Barber how he safe he feels, if he has not already closed down shop. What about the prostitutes that work the parking lot at country fresh, across the street in "Springfield Township", what about the degenerate drug addicts that hang around the shopping center where the only bank in Hartwell is. Also you might want to check with Hamilton county to see how many registered sex offenders are living in Hartwell. I worked in the "one" bank in Hartwell, and I know the community officer, she worked in the bank as a detail officer, it was now secret what kind things happen in the neighborhood. Yes there are worse places in Cincinnati, much worse, but that does not make Hartwell a "great neighborhood". I hope things get better there, I really do, and I believe the majority of people who live there are decent people who are victims of an unfortunate situation, but I would personally never live in Hartwell in its current state. I talked to enough people who were long time residents to know that Hartwell has gotten much worse in recent years. Also working in a bank gives a person a special insight to what is really going on in the neighborhood, I also worked at branches in Blue Ash, Mason, Pleasant Ridge, and Walnut Hills. Walnut Hills was by far the worst ( I also had frighting experiences in Walnut Hills while playing at The Greenwich Tavern, and The Brew House, wow.) Hartwell was second worst. I guess that it hard to accept the reality of the current state of the neighborhood if you have lived in a place for a long time and no longer have an objective view, denial? And as far as and Atlanta, I have not feared for my safety while in downtown at night, or other areas of the city like I did in Cincinnati neighborhoods such as North side, Walnut Hills, Roselawn, Over the Rhine, Avondale, Corryville, etc. Nor have I had any close calls with potentially violent people like I did in Cincinnati, more times than I would like to remember. The same is true for my time in NYC. I only have my personal experiences to base my opinions, and I am not trying to offend anybody, just being truthful!

Well uprightbass, your "truthfullness" is a little over exagerated from where I sit. And no, I am not living in a state of denial. I have lived here for 8 years. I have seen the good changes in the neighborhood, and I know there are far more good people who live here than bad, and believe me, I know this neighborhood far better than you because I choose to get involved and be a part of a solution instead of picking out the negatives about every neighborhood in Cincinnati that I can think of (which is exactly what you have done in your ONLY 2 posts on this forum). There are no prostitutes in the county fresh parking lot, when did you detail here 1980??? Let me tell you something, nothing ticks me off more than someone trying to tell me what my neighborhood is and when I dont agree with them, I'm in denial. I have dedicated the past 8 years of my life to this neighborhood and I work my butt off as a volunteer for more hours a week than many people work in a week at a full time job. So I get a little defensive-but one thing I do know is this neighborhood. I dont do it for political gain like many others, I do it because I care about where my family lives and I would never EVER live somewhere I didnt feel safe. Hartwell had many multi-family homes when we moved here, many of them are being converted back into single family homes. We were one of 9 communities in the City of Cincinnati that had an increase of 6% in our property values, we have new developments trying to open shop here, we have a new school, new recreation center, what neighborhood gets developments if it is not a good neighborhood to live in. As for the sex offenders, 45216 is part of Springfield Twp, Hartwell, Carthage, Elmwood Place and St. Bernard--and a majority of those sex offenders (close to 60% of the total 89 in the 45216 zip code) are crammed into apartments owned by a West CHester slumlord who has his name on a list with the state to put offenders in his buildings--so whos fault is that and how do you suggest we address that with all the laws that protect the sex offenders.
Little advice, dont log on here and tell people how they can refer to their neighborhood. Hartwell is a great neighborhood, and 8 years of living here and countless hours of being involved in the neighborhood gives me the ability to make that correct statement.

I think the prostitutes are up there by that nasty little bar. Was that called the Salty Dog or the Vogue? I can't recall. I just remember that I went to a couple of bachelor parties in the 90's where the prostitutes were picked up in that strip north of Galbraith on the West side of Vine. Thankfully, I'm too old for that sort of thing, but I think they were doing a booming business at the party.
