Pieces of this have been addressed in other posts but not 100% clear. Here my situation:

a) Car has current valid CA registration. It is a model year 2010.
b) Registration on the owned car expires in mid-July. Have no intention of re-registering it and paying that bill. Have the clear title, no lienholders. the car is a weekend car and is already in storage in Cincy.
c) Will be moving and arriving by car just a few days before that mid-July date.

As mentioned, the owned car reg will expire in mid-July. By the time I get to registering it in Ohio, I'm sure it will be past mid July with all the other stuff to do. I assume there is no penalty if you register in Ohio with a reg that just expired in CA. Would make no sense.

DMV in CA told me that once you register in Ohio just send them the CA bill with a copy of the new Ohio reg to prove it has left the state, etc.

In general how long do you have in Ohio to register a car (leased or owned) once you arrive? My wife's car is a lease car.

To register an out of state car you have to drive the car the BMV and park along Court Street as close to the BMV as possible (basically between Walnut and Main only). They'll walk out with you and look at it, write the VIN number. Then you'll go back inside to get your plates. Cash or check only.
