What a drag about the Carousel. Used to play sneak in there and play tennis, and go swimming.
Here is a funny story about the Carousel.
Once, when I came home from college, a friend came to meet me. He got to the Cincy airport 8 hours beforeI did. My mother agreed to pick up my friend. When he called she told him that she would meet him at the carousel. He came in to the airport and waited around at the baggage claim for hours. Finally, after calling my house many times he got ahold of my mother. He asked her where she was. She asked him where he was, because she had been waiting for him at the Carousel. Problem was, he thought she meant the baggage carousel at the airport. Oh well. Needless, to say, this was not the greatest of visits.
I guess, given the conditions of the hotel now, this is a story that won't be repeated.

Stories like that also won't be repeated because of cellphones! No more racing inside from mowing the grass only to hear a dial tone when you pick up the receiver...no more interrupted "intimate moments"...no more "about time you got home" or "how long has it been since you checked your answering machine?"
Once upon a time long long ago, there was a shuttle service called the Airporter which served as a car service between CVG and some of the area's "better" hotels. My dad often used them to go from carrousel to Carousel, hahaha. 'twas easier to have Mom hop in the car and collect him at 8001 Reading Rd, and cheaper, than to stash wheels at the airport when he had to leave town for P & G business trips.
On the right as you drove onto the grounds of what was formerly Ohio's only five-star motel was a window-walled restaurant called the La Ronde Room. The windows mostly overlooked the plant-and-shrub-lined outdoor pool. My folks treated it as an "occasion" place when the occasion wasn't a major milestone for somebody but still warranted a nice night out. It's where I had my first encounter with a "Jacket Required for Gentlemen after 6:00" rule; luckily the managers had a whole rack of ugly - and therefore unlikely to be stolen - green blazers to lend to violaters of the rule. The La Ronde is also where I first saw "Surf & Turf" on a restaurant menu.
The Greek candy store, ice cream parlor, and sandwich place on East Epworth Ave in Winton Place had an unmistakably Greek name which began with "E." My trivia bank draws a blank. But thanks for the reminder, Ms Lykins!

Goyguy,
You're right about cellphones...they are both a blessing and a curse.
Loved going to La Ronde--it was a big treat for me too. And wasn't it actually round. Also, I think I remember a carousel horse in the lobby.
I believe it might have been you who said, in an earlier post, that Frisch's mainliner, across the street, is closed. If so the poor kids of Cincy have lost the best place to meet girls in the history of the city. Not to mention the Brawny Lad sandwiches, which retains a hallowed spot in my stomach and memory

You know the old saying: If you have to ask, you can't afford it!
Dunno if that applies to Mike Fink's, though. Sure hope not.

The last time we went there a few years ago, we felt that it was overpriced then.
I do not mind paying for a good meal..But it has to be good! (Like the Maisonette in days of old)

Don't know if they have been mentioned yet, but does anyone remember Jerry's on Glenway Avenue? What about TW Lee's in Sharonville?
My mom would take me to Jerry's for my birthday when I was a kid. I'd get a free miniature birthday cake. It was always a special time I looked forward to.
TW Lee's used to have the best prime rib. I've never had it that good anywhere else.

I remember "La Maisonette" or something very much like that, in the 1950's in the Alm's Hotel, very posh and very delicious buffet, in my memory it represented elegance and very fine dining.
I left cincy when I went off to college and havent been back.....was there an Alm's Hotel downtown?

After receiving a 5-star rating for 41 consecutive years, the Maisonette closed. There had been talk of reopening it in Kenwood, but last I heard they opted against that and have decided to just let it remain a part of Cincinnati's past.
