My Mom worked at Macintosh's and the tornado happened on her night off. Bill Macintosh also owned Zimmers , a popular German place with entertainment in the Rathskeller bar and Macintosh's Steak and Kettle. He was a great guy and well respected on the Cincinnati dinning scene.
I also loved Grammers and Wiggins as well. Both were great old heavy timbered tudor style restaurant.
Wiggins has a seating area set apart for men only at lunch. The point was men work and therefore needed to get in and out faster than the ladies who lunched. Since I was a working women down town that really ate at me (no pun intended).

Mary

I loved Mills cafeteria. Back then you dressed up to go into the city to shop. I can remember being all dressed up with my Mom shopping for clothes and stopping into Mills cafeteria for lunch. It seemed to elegant even though it was a cafeteria. I remember heavy sterling individual coffee pots and they had a great Waldorf salad.

Mary

.
Sorry Charlie. I was born and raised in Brentwood and know that Herny's was for sure located on Galbraith Rd. about a half block west of the intersection with Winton on the north side of the street. There is a Wendy's there now. As a 4-year old, my mom used to take me there. It was the first restaurant I ever remember. I called it "The Man in the Moon" because of the smiling face of the hamburger on their sign. I loved that place.

There was for sure a fast food restuarant located between Compton and Fleming (west side of the road) called Burger Chef. As was mentioned in an earlier thread, there was another one located at Compton and Vine. Before I left the area in 1980, the location had turned into a small Perkins.

Somebody mentioned Zinos. The first Zino's if I remember right was in Hyde Park.

I've read through over 18 pages of nostalgia that has brought a smile to my face. So far, these places have not been mentioned:

Acropolis Chili. Best local late night food

Mariemont Inn's National Exemplor Restaurant: Was a favorite Sunday night place for my parents to take our family. I remember the great Hungarian mushroom soup.

Sorrentos in Reading: Classic Southern Italian

Southern Trails in Kentucky: A banquet place

Carters Restaurants: They had the original KFC recipe (***Update: Just saw it has been mentioned. There was one on Winton Road in Finneytown next to Grote Bakery that burned down in around 1965. It reopened up the road toward Galbraith and eventually closed. I think Acropolis was in the building.)

Hathaways in Downtown (Carew Tower arcade?)

Hi Rise Deli, Clifton. Great place for sandwiches and an ice cold Hudi.

Town & Country Restaurant Park Hills,KY: Famous Spinning Salad

And finally:

Rookwood Pottery in Mt. Adams: Great burgers.

Thanks for the memories!

RJ

P.S. Left Cincy in 1980 but our family still enjoys a home made version of Cincinnati Chili. It tastes best when the windows get steamed up!

Thanks for that one - a friend and I have been trying to recall what
else was in that Compton-Fleming block of Winton. We used to
tool up to Winton on our bikes to visit Groete Bakery and the
old Brentwood Chili (later P&T Restaurant). While Brentwood Bowl,
Kolping Grove, UDF and a pharmacy came to mind, we had
forgotten about the Burger Chef up there. Pizza Hut just west
of that on Compton - yes?

I THINK the first one was in Correyville at the old firehouse and
that the Hyde Park location came later. Could easily be mistaken.
A few people have mentioned their "Zinover" - a.k.a. calzone.

Was mentioned in the Reading Rd. thread. Sorrento's has had
several owners over the years. For a few years the Sakelos
family were owners. They have owned other area restaurants,
such as the Busy Bee.

Ditto. Had a big-city kind of bustle to it. Used to serve malts in
conical paper cups seated in a metal holder: classic.

Yes there used to be a Shakeys in that block ("If you put your cigarette butts in your plate, we'll serve your pizza in an ashtray"). All you can eat at Shakeys . I think the Pizza Hut opened a block west of Winton on Compton. And of course McDonalds opened in later years right across from Burger Chef.

There was also a Dairy Queen Brazier restaurant right on the corner of Kolping Grove. I think I recall that there used to be a pony keg there because we'd always get drinks there after we played little league baseball at Kolping Grove.

And P&T Restaurant. I took a look on Google Maps Street View and yes it's still there. I grew up on Pringle Drive down the street from the owners who came from someplace in Eastern Europe.

Between the Grote Bakery strip mall and the P&T strip mall was a Ponderosa Steakhouse. I see that now it's a CVS.

I remember that the man who ran the place called himself
Carlos. He was very friendly and served good chili. Was
he the owner?

The business was called Brentwood Chili before it became
P&T. The decor and seating changed along with the name,
but I'm pretty sure that the owners were the same. The
switch must have occurred around 1970, give or take. The
older business had a jukebox, and was much more like a
neighborhood chili place.
