Default What is Price Hill really like?

I am coming to Cincinnati ST for work (3 -6 mon) from the Detroit area.
Looking at rentals online in Price Hill area near the river. Never really been to Cincinnati - only driven through. The best area to rent in Detroit is on the river - is the same true in Cincinnati? Thanks!

Price Hill is a mixed bag. All kinds of people live out there, but all kinds of things go on too. There are quiet secluded areas because of the winding hills, and there are not so quiet areas. Personally I would live close to the river because it is quieter and more scenic, but it really depends on where. I wouldn't recommend Lower Price Hill because of the crime and blight, and the only way it's worth moving to is if you plan on rehabbing a vacant or old rowhouse, and it doesn't look like you're staying long. The river in Cincinnati, on the west side, is cheaper to live by than a lot of property up the hill. The east side is being built up and condos go for half a million on that side. Sedamsville is a quiet area right along the river with a lot of charm. I think you should tour the East-West-Lower Price Hill/Westwood/Sedamsville area to see what area and type of living you are most comfortable with. Westwood has a ton of more traditional apartments, as opposed to Price Hill and Sedamsville, which are primarily 1-4 family units.

Did you happen upon Price Hill because of its location? In other words, will your job be downtown or close by?

"Hillside" broke it down for you well in terms of what's in that vicinity. Price Hill is bisected by Glenway Ave, which winds downhill and across Lower Price Hill before connecting to the downtown area via the 8th Street Viaduct. (West 8th St itself resumes along its same latitude at the top of the hill. Confused yet? LOL) The other principal east-west arteries are Warsaw Ave in the main part of the neighborhood, and River Rd along - guess what - the river. Elberon, Overlook and Maryland are three north-south streets which connect Price Hill "proper" with the riverfront area; each of them have rental "neighborhoods" around their lower ends.

West Price Hill has always been known by that name. Many Italian immigrants to Cincinnati put down roots there, while others used it as their "first step up" from the "Little Italy" in Fairmount. But that area and the remainder of the neighborhood were also historically German-American, with a capital "G-A," and overwhelmingly Catholic. Seton (for girls) and Elder (for boys) High Schools are still situated in the heart of the community, even though many of their students no longer live within walking distance. There has been ethnic transition taking place throughout Price Hill. While large-scale "flight" along the lines of Detroit in the '60s hasn't occurred, there's now a substantial Hispanic/AA presence in what not too long ago was White-only-and-don't-you-forget-it territory. Whatever tensions there are don't run high, however, and more streets than not remain "good" in terms of safety and sound housing stock. I think the long-term outlook for Price Hill is positive, even as the Cincinnati media have "Vietnamized" it into West Price Hill (as noted, not a new label) and East Price Hill (a newly minted name within the past decade, used as "code language" for "where most of the 'minorities' live.")

There's a string of other city neighborhoods along the river headed westward, including Addyston, Fernbank, and Sayler Park. But the "hottest" locale flanking the Ohio is in northern Kentucky, in Covington and Newport especially. Cincinnati's East End has lately jumped on the gentrification bandwagon too.

Unlike the Motor City, Cincinnati has many livable neighborhoods within the city limits yet nowhere near the river. Some sections have seen better days, but you won't find block after block of empty apartment houses and vacant lots there. Clue us in some more as to what type of home you'd like to rent, whether schools are a consideration, etc, and we'll be better able to assist.

Default RE; Price Hill

There are great places to live on the river, but on the East side of downtown. Price Hill is the continuation of a huge ghetto which incorporates lower Mt. Auburn, Over-the-Rhine, and the West End ( except for City-West, which is OK). Western Hills is a bad area. If you like river living...theres housing in the central business district, the east side and they're building between the Reds & Bengals stadiums.

West Price Hill is still fairly nice, it borders Covedale and Delhi Twp. while East and Lower are 2 of the nastiest hoods in Cincy!

[quote=ethericartist;3029417] Western Hills is a bad area. quote]

That's pretty vague actually. Yes, "Western Hills", the high school is a dump.

But when most people say Western Hills, it could mean anything from Bridgetown to Sedamsville. However, Fairmount, East and Lower Price Hill as well as East Westwood are definately not pleasant areas...with the exception of some of the newer developments in EPH. But, Western Hills in general, depending on what people want to consider it, has lots of decent parts....

Spot on.

If safety is an issue, I'd avoid a good chunk of "the city". To be honest, Cincy is a high crime city, so there may be more of one than the other, you know?

The City: areas with high crime

East and Lower Price Hill
North and South Fairmount
Westwood
Western Hills
Camp Washington
Northside
Cumminsville
Milvale
Winton Place
Winton Terrace
College Hill
Bond Hill
Avondale
Walnut Hills
Evanston
Clifton south of MLK
Corryville
Mt. Auburn
Roselawn
Carthage
Elmwood Place
Downtown

Areas with lesser crime:

Hyde Park-recommended
Oakley
St. Bernard
West Price Hill (sorta)
Mt. Adams
Eden Park
East End
Sedamsville-recommended
Sayler Park
Pleasant Ridge-recommended
Madisonville
Columbia-Tusculum
Linwood
Mt. Washington
Kennedy Heights
Paddock Hills-def. recommended
North Avondale

Like I mentioned in my previous post. Saying "Western Hills" is bad is just painting it with too broad a brush IMO. It's not all bad, especially when the definition of that "community" is so vague to begin with. It all depends on what part and what you may actually consider "Western Hills". So many different neighborhoods collectively make up that area to begin with...

Elmwood Place and St. Bernard are their own cities like Norwood is. And there are parts of College Hill that I definately would recommend and parts of Madisonville that I definately wouldn't recommend but all in all that's a pretty good list.

Skip Price Hill...I am a native Cincinnatian living in Detroit...small world...right?? Price Hill is declining very fast...I would stay away. What about Delhi or Covedale? There are traditional apartments in those places and they are much safer...they are just the next neighborhood over from Price Hill...
