No overreaction at all
I went there on Monday, March 27th in the afternoon. Maybe it was because of the time/day I visited, but I honestly didn't see anything sketchy in the slightest. Driving through the area, I can also say I've seen far, far worse. I saw a racially diverse crowd, many older people, and a number of parents with young kids, either walking, or at the kids place by Kohl's. No security that day, but a few custodians. Perhaps it's worse at night. But yeah, nothing scary at all happened to me, although I know I can't judge the area for sure by one afternoon. Anyway, a handful of malls in the Chicagoland area are surely shadier, not to mention this place is just quiet/dead, I guess aside from the odd incident.

I don't want to accuse anyone of making things up when I can't say, but I honestly can't picture "punk kids" hanging out there at all, because it's not exactly a "happening" spot, no one to impress there or anything...

And the area didn't seem "bad" at all, maybe a little tired or dated at most, but still has some retail, and how bad can it be? It doesn't hold a candle to things I've seen in Chicago/Chicagoland, and I've never once had anyone hassle me - even at possibly the most "ghetto" Chicagoland mall with the absolute worst rep... And that one actually has people in it, unlike Forest Fair! Maybe Forest Fair was sketchy when it actually had more business, I don't know, but now? I'd have to say that was a fluke incident.

No, the area is good. The mall was built at the wrong time in the wrong area of town. 2 other malls, Tri County and Northgate are both within a few miles of Forest Fair.

When the mall opened, it was too big and stuffed with too many very high end stores for the upper middle class lower wealthy class area.

If it was built in Kenwood or Montgomery it would probably have succeeded.

BTW, Tri County and Northgate are both drying up and dying.
