Franke01, where was Woodward High located?

I was in the 7th grade at Madisonville Jr. High, which was on the NE corner of Duck Creek Road and Madison Road until we moved in April 1959. I was kind of a shrimp in height at the time, but I had kind of a beatnik streak in me, so I started learning to play the bass violin at school, with the dream of slapping the strings with a beat rather than using the bow. I don't know why I chose to play a monster like that. I had to stand on a chair to play it. LOL.
Do you mean Lyon Jr. High? Or am I confused?

I was using Google Earth a little while ago, trying to find Madisonville Public School. It looks like it was RAZED. It's...gone? I went there from 1950-1957. Then on to the brand-new Lyon Jr. High from 1957-1960. Then Withrow 1960-1963.

Can anyone tell me what happened to Madisonville School? It was in the block surrounded by Ward Street, Prentice Street, Mathis Street, and the railroad. The junior high building was across Ward on the other side. Is that some other kind of building on the site now?

Thanks for any help.

Default my little input

This was great to see, but disappointing as well. My family moved to Cincinnati in 1955 from Milwaukee. I was about 9 years old. We moved into a brand new apartment in Stratford Manor. I don't remember much about it other then the school out front where I was a school crossing guard. When my family moved away 6 months later I can remember being devastated because this seemed like such a great little world with lots of friends, great play areas, a great school, and everything close by.

I lived in New England for over 50 years then moved back to OH in 2001 and have done previous searches about Stratford Manor hoping to go visit the area again, but never found anything until tonight. It is a shame to see it is mostly gone, but it is nice to have the great memories, even if it was only for 6 months. I envy you folks that lived there much longer. It must have been great growing up there.

The only other name I remember is my older sister went to Lyons Junior High School, and I have not been able to find out anything about that either. If anyone knows if this school is still around please let me know.

Hi Ctrymaus. I don't remember it being called Lyon Jr. High. However, I was incorrect about one of the streets I mentioned. The Jr. High was located on the NE corner of Red Bank Road and Madison Road. It may have been called Madison Jr. High. Been too long to clearly remember. There was a creek (probably Duck Creek) next to it which flowed under Madison Road and spilled into the Little Miami. As much as things have changed since the 50s, I wouldn't be surprised if the school is long gone by now. It wasn't all that old when I went there though. I only went there 7 1/2 months before we moved away from Cincy.

A piece of Red Bank Road where it met Madison Road has been removed as you can see on the bottom photo in the following link. All that's left of it now is a slit between the trees where that part of the road was.

I just Googled the area, and it looks like it's still there. But it's hard to say for sure if it's still a school or not.

Welcome Neplant. Glad to have you join us. Funny how things change over time. You're right, there's not a single trace left of Stratford Manor, except for a couple of streets. It was a good place with lots of good friends. Moving was hard for me too.

Looks like you lived there when we did.

That *is* what was Lyon Junior High. It is bounded by Red Bank Expressway, Madison Road, Anderson Place, and Chandler Street + woods. I went there from 1957-1960. Its first year open was 1956. The principal of Madisonville Public School *had* been Harold Nichols, but he moved to Lyon Junior High in 1956. So I couldn't escape him. ::grin:: I am pretty sure it's still a school, but it has a different name and looks somewhat run-down and seedy, at least from Madison Road. Oh! Google Earth says it's now called John P. Parker Elementary School.

Thanks!

Thanks for the correction. Shows what I remember about the name. I'll have to see if I can find an old report card to jog my memory. We may have passed each other in the halls, or the lunchroom.

I tried looking for the other school you mentioned by the street you listed. It's kinda hard to tell on Google's Aerial Map what's there now (or not there). You must've lived in Madisonville.

It's interesting how a number of us here have moved away and are just now looking for some of the old landmarks around the area, mostly for nostalgia's sake I suppose.

Default Lyon Jr. High

I went to Lyon Jr. High for 7th, 8th and 9th grade starting in 1969. The principal then was Charles Knuckles. I too went to Eastwood Elementary where the principal was Mary Alice McCartney. I still remember my kindergarten teacher was Mrs. Walsh, 1st grade was Ms. Jones, 2nd was Mrs. Sloan etc. Now, I couldn't tell you what I had for breakfast this morning but I remember my elementary teachers! Go figure.

As for Lyon, there was also an assistant principal named Mr. George Jacobs and another by the name of Mr. Bruner.

Anyone out there from any of my classes?

That's the New Life Church, relatively new. I voted there when I lived on Hurd Avenue.

The school building on the west side of Ward Street is still there -- I think it's a charter school or pre-school now.

I left Cincy April 1958 or 59, long before you started school. All these years I thought the Jr. High was called Madison or Madisonville. Well, at least I got the location right.

You're memory is better than mine. I can't really recall the names of any of my teachers, much less principals. If I can ever find any of my old report cards, I'm sure that'd jog some of my brains cells. My memory remembers the Manor, some of the friends I had when we lived there, and some of the great times we had.

I'm sure many of your classmates are still kicking. Maybe a few will come across this forum and thread sooner or later. I often think about the kids I knew and wonder how they're doing now. Do you remember the names of any of the kids you knew or went to school with? It might grab their attention if they ever come across this thread.

Hello Everyone Redbankgirl, I remember Mr. Nichols too. My favorite teacher was Mr. Alexander. Do you remember him? Sometimes his wife would come and sub in some classes. Do you remember Mr. Nichols children? They didn't go to school there but sometimes visited, they were both almost like albino's , but their eyes weren't pink. I also remember miss Mcartney from Eastwood , but I don't remebber the other teaches names. Nightbaazzar, I will be getting into the storage to get my christmas stuff down and will look for pictures then. I love seeing others starting to come in here. Got to go now. Betty
