Does anyone know of a farm around Batavia OH where I can buy free range chickens, farm raised beef (not sure about the right term, farm raised could be wrong ) I do not want to buy 10 chickens at a time and I understand with beef it means a quarter cow and such. Any assistance is greatly appreciated. I am also not looking to join any agricultural group where I would have top buy a certain specified amount.

I quit hooking up people with farmers a dozen years ago. I got tired of having the people show up at the farm expecting free range chickens at grocery store prices and expecting a hind quarter of beef at $2/ lb. It was a waste of my time and the farmer's.

For the record, the few producers of true "free range" chickens that I know are charging about $6/ lb. However, most of the people claiming that they are selling "free range" aren't really allowing the birds out of the barn.

Here are two options in the Cincinnati area (in the broad sense).

First, head to a county fair and meet some of the fine kids raising 4-H animals. Generally, from my experience, they do an excellent job and often can raise the animal in the manner you want it. For example, we paid one kid for a 4-H steer that was corn-fed from the beginning because we wanted with significant marbling throughout the carcass. We purchased the entire steer as we had 4-6 other people who were interested in parts of the animal. Yes, you have to buy the whole thing but that is how it is sold. We used to also buy a whole hog, chickens by the dozen and a half dozen ducks. i do not have any specific counties as we generally purchased in Lorain and Geuaga counties outside of Cleveland.

Second, outside of Lexington, KY, the University of Kentucky Butcher Shop is a boutique butcher shop that sells the meats from their herd.

Thank you for the information. I was not aware of the 4-H animals option.
I moved from Cleveland and had a source in Peninsula for the kind of chickens I was looking for.

Would you mind sharing your source in Peninsula?
