Default Moving to Cincy

I am from Iowa and we are moving to Cincy so my fiance can start his residency at U of Cincy. We are looking to buy a house since we will be there for about 7 years. I am familair with the areas most people say to look but sadly they are too far outside of the city (he will be work long crazy hours and I don't want him driving that far) or they are too expensive (as you know residents don't start out making great cash). I have seen some houses in the Norwood and St. Bernard area that are nice. What are these areas like? I realize there is crime anywhere but since I will be home alone a lot and out walking our dog, I want to make sure we are not being stupid by moving w/out checking into the areas first.

Hello Hawkeye, I live in St. Bernard and I strongly recommend that you look at the homes here. There are a lot of great affordable homes for sale right now. Also, I am a student at UC and it takes me only 7-10 minutes to get to campus every day. I will be the first to admit, though, that St. Bernard is not surrounded by the most desirable neighborhoods, but St. Bernard itself is very safe. Also, Norwood is very convenient and has a lot of nice affordable homes too. Let me know if you want more info on St. Bernard.

I live on the Northern edge of Norwood and overall it's pretty safe. I personally prefer the north and eastern parts of Norwood because they look nicer and are close to decent neighborhoods. I personally would avoid south Norwood (going towards Dana avenue) because of it's proximity to a not so nice neighborhood called Evanston. You might also want to look into Pleasant Ridge. I'm not sure if you plan on renting or buying but PR has some nice housing stock for reasonable prices. It's just north of Norwood on Montgomery road.

I have no idea how safe norwood is because, to the best of my knowledge, they don't report crime statistics.

Default Where to live.

From what your lifestyle sounds like, you would probably love the Clifton-Gaslight area. It is just a 10 minute walk north of the University and is full of wonderful houses and people. A nice big park to walk your dog in and plenty of resaurants and coffee shops to choose from.

hey. i am in basically the same situation. i will be starting my residency at university hospital & plan to purchase a house that is fairly close (10-15 mins max). since i am a single female, safety is my #1 concern. i was a little worried when i first drove to UC & saw vine street. does anyone have any suggestions for me? i am likely going to be somewhere in the 175-230k range in price. thanks in advance!

Default Cincy Move

I think you will find the Clifton area very nice with lots of shops and small cafes. What is nice about the Cincinnati area you will find lots of communites that are near the UC campus that offer affordable housing. Another site to go to would be cincy.com.

You may both want to consider Glendale. While the drive may be a bit more (but still within 30 minutes), it's a lovely, safe village with nice yards and good community feel. You can find nice starter houses for under $200 and may even find some of the new houses for less than $230. Check out the website (The Village of Glendale, Ohio).
