Default What neighborhood?

We are seriously considering moving to the area. We are trying to isolate some neighborhoods so we can get a more accurate idea of actual housing costs vs. quality of life things.

We really want to find an older home, preferably a Victorian, but something into the 30's era would be a possibility. We will still have one kid in school so the district or options for a better magnet school are important. We want to be somewhere a bit more urban or closer in to the city so we are spending less time driving and commuting. I really want to find somewhere that meets those and isn't a high crime or neighborhood on the decline area.

From reading through the forums it sounds like the east side is maybe more what we are looking for. Any suggestions for finding a place under $200,000 yet still in a good neighborhood near things? I work at home, my spouse would be working downtown-ish by the VA.

Northside, College Hill, Norwood (maybe), Oakley (slim), Pleasant Ridge...

Northside and College Hill are not East Side per se, a little more centrally located...
