Wow, MrsMikey and I were talking about Zantigos just the other day. Our first exposure to "Mexican" food. Now there are wonderful real Mexican Restaraunts all over town.

Cancun at Hamilton/Pleasant Ave and Kemper is one of the best.

I have zero recollection of "Squire Jack's," but love me some Long John Silver's and always try to snag at least one meal there when I'm "back home." Another favorite, now gone, fish n' chips place was Arthur Treacher's. Frisch's used to turn out a tasty order of fish n' chips, too, with crinkle-cut fries and served in a cardboard container lined with "English newspaper."
Drifting over to Reading Rd for a sec, did anybody patronize Sweeney's during the ten or so years they were open at the former Meir's Place? Word had it that they were good for seafood.
Ms CF, I think it's high time that you take a "trip down memory lane" in person. I bet Hartwell Girl would jump at the chance to give a tour, LOL! You could start and/or stop the excursion at the Vogue Cafe. Other than Vine St's going to seed (and fast food and national-chain pharmacies) not much is different compared to even forty years ago.

Hi,

What era photos are you looking for from Hartwell? I have one that might be of interest. Send me a private message or reply here....

But the golf course on Caldwell Dr remains, an opportunity for anyone and everyone to get in a few rounds while fully exposed to EMF's from the high-voltage power lines which pass right over the middle of the greens! And while the areas of Carthage and Hartwell "downhill" from there are fraying at the edges in spots, there's still a distinct upscale feel to the homes in that vicinity up to St X.

This reminds me of a "bright spot" along that always-raggedy part of Vine St between Ridgeway and Caldwell. A shop all about model railroads is there now, along the west side tucked in among the rooming houses.
Goyguy...There is an Armory still there behind Krogers. Log onto the Hartwell web page to see what is actually being proposed for the use of that building..Hartwell

Default Checker Stores

Upon reviewing the posts on this thread, it looks like none of us
remembered the Checker Store on Vine, about a block north of
Velva Sheen.

There were several Checker Stores around town, but this is the
only one I can remember. They were a type of hardware store
but, beyond bicycle tires, I cannot remember what all they used
to carry. That store must have closed in the mid-1970's.

I remember the stores although not that particular location.

If I remember correctly, there was a very small Sears store in Oakley or Mt. Lookout (across the street from the 20th Century theater) and I think the Checker's Stores were kind of like that.

I remember that Checkers store. My husbands very first Fathers Day gift came from there, a 410 shotgun. This was in June 1970, a month before our son was born. I think it closed not long after that.

There were also Checker's Stores at both Knowlton's Corner directly across Spring Grove Ave from what has become the White Castle and one north of Galbraith on the east side of Colerain Ave. This location now has an auto parts store. My first bicycle came from the Checker's at Knowlton's Corners.

Didn't Checker stores become Van Leunan's? I think there was a Squire Jack's in the Valley Shopping Center. Also on Vine in Elmwood Place... Bond Furniture owned by Harvey Egherman "Our Word is our Bond !"

FYI, there's a story about Squire Jack's beginning on page 88 of the August 1973 issue of Cincinnati Magazine, which coincidentally can be found here:
