I had a bad experience with Gold Star when I was in college. The problem simply could have been the questionable sanitary practices of that particular Gold Star location on Third Street in downtown Dayton, but nevertheless I've not been able to set foot inside a Gold Star restaurant for 30 years! LOL

Maybe they thought it was a drive-thru. I hope no one was hurt though.

maybe it's just bad luck, but it seems ludlow and clifton is kinda sloppy and the food isn't that good, possibly because it's a student location. any thoughts anybody?

Can't comment on the quality at Clifton's Skyline since I only know how I like my nati chili for those times when to not order would mean being a rude guest or starving (LOL!) But I can speak to the issue of its cleanliness. Unchanged over decades is its late-night popularity for UC students, whose fondness for running wild and trashing the place at "all hours" is also perennial. Employees and management alike grew weary of having to restore its appearance to "spotless" over and over again probably before any of us were born. They do "necessity maintenance" instead.
Readers may want to stop here unless they're of like mind with my frequent Quixotic tilts against the windmill of Cincinnati's class consciousness and racism (served up with the usual disclaimer that most of the United States has both to some extent, four-way with cheese in this case lol.) If Skyline were to open an outlet at the economic disaster called the Avondale Town Center at Forest Ave and Reading Rd, f'rinstance, two things would happen whenever a crew of rowdy young folks rampaged through. One would be that police wagons would roll up, and a bunch of AA adolescents would land in jail with rap sheets started or added to. The other would be that the outlet would soon be closed. However! Dean's List Dave and darling Cindy are ambitious young college students with advantaged backgrounds and bright futures. An arrest record could spell disaster for them. If Mommy and/or Daddy aren't attorneys themselves, they're a phone call away from one. The good, and activist, Clifton neighbors would be beside themselves if the location on Ludlow so much as hinted at going out of business.
(AHEM) Any more votes for Empress?

Dixie
I would have to vote for Dixie Chili on the Kentucky side of the river!! We even bring cans of the stuff home to Nashville.
My husband is from upper Michigan and thought it sounded very weird but he has converted!! He doesn't mind visiting the in-laws since he gets to take a trip for some chili!!

I voted for Empress, but actually my favorite was Chili Time. My father used to be the accountant for the Chili Bowl, which I think was on Vine St (but I didn't like their Chili that much).

I voted other. Although I like all the chili I had from some of those places I could not find the traditional spicey meat&beans chili I like best. I like my families homemade chili the best. Loaded with cheese and crackers, and some jalapeno's of course.
Which is good because I don't know of any good bowls of chili served around here.
