Son wants to commute to UC from Fields Ertel area next year. With first classes starting at 8 a.m., this would be a rush hour commute. Anyone making that trip and how long (generally) does it take? I assume he'll just stay on 71 until the Taft exit. Thanks!

35-40 mins. Traffic usually backs up from the exit down to the bottom of the Kenwood cut of the hill. If it rains add 10 extra.

If he does have an 8 AM class, then he would miss the bad traffic back up, hopefully. If he has 9 AM then he could be in trouble.

Not so. I drive I71 every day and the big back up is for the 8AM class. Kenwood is backed up. WHT is backed up all the way out onto I-71 with a 2 lane exit. By 8:30 its all calmed down.

OP- If this is a choice of location, tell him no. Its just too far. He will end up sleeping in on rainy days and finding excuses not to go to class. Walking distance is best. And, if you spend as much in Clifton as you will on Fields Ertel he will have a nice place to live.

Traffic can vary. UC is a commuter campus and living arrangements there is a discussion for another day (there is a reason it is a commuter campus). Anyhow, if location is the question, then living closer to campus than Mason would be great, but from the OP it seemed as though that wasnt the point. Only way to really figure out what traffic is going to be like is to find out. I take 71 everyday and i miss the traffic.
