Help finding a good bakery
Does anyone have suggestions for a good Cincinnati area bakery? I'm primarily interested in fresh artisan breads, not sweets. French bread, Ciabatta, Olive loafs, sourdough, etc. etc.
Some background:
- I've already tried Kroger and Biggs. They neither have the quality and variety I'm hoping for. Lots of their "bakery" bread is clearly more than a day old.
- I've only been to Busken's Hyde Park store. It was mostly sweets. Virtually no bread. Same thing with the nearby Servatii in Oakley.
- Fresh Market has great artisan breads, but the prices can be crazy. In other cities I know it's possible to get that kind of quality for $4.00 a loaf and under.
Does anyone have any suggestions? - Frankly, if you have good suggestions about sweets too, that's fine. I'm sure my wife would appreciate that

Oh, yea. Its Shadeau Breads, 1336 Main Street, OTR. For what you describe, there is nowhere as good. Bill Shadeau is a master of the breads. There are always baguettes, 1 and 2 pound, Ciabatta, French white, etc. I have two olive loaves in the freezer because Bill only makes them on Sat and they don't last long. Of course, he makes excellent pastries too. But you can get good pastries at Servatii also. You can't get breads like Shadeau has.
This is the real deal. People in the know go to Shadeau. Don't go in the late afternoon cause the good stuff is always gone. Sat am is a pain because there is always a line. You can call and order and pick up later if that works for you.

Krogers drove most of the small neighborhood bakeries (also, butchers, florists, etc.) out of business in the '80s.

Cosign on the recommendation for Shadeau Breads.
Also, try Findlay Market on a Saturday morning. Among other bakers, Blue Oven Bakery offers artisan breads that are pretty fantastic . . . but they tend to sell out fast, so go early!

Shadeau does make some good breads. They have a very small selection of their bread at IGA (at least the one on Ludlow) and I get it occasionally.

Breadsmith on Montgomery Rd. in Montgomery has really nice breads. For baked goods that are sweet my favorite bakery is the North College Hill Bakery on Hamilton Avenue.
