Doris Day (Cincinnati, Green, Wilmington: for sale, hotel, house)

Here's a long shot. I am gathering information for a book I am writing. I am looking for anyone who has memory's of Doris Day's early years in Cincinnati (She was born as Mary Ann Von Kappelhoff). She grew up in Cincinnati, in the West End, and lived in Cincy until about 1940, before she went off to Hollywood to become the All American Girl.

Anyone have any memories/interactions with her?

MY Husband's grandfather went to school with her. I could ask him if he remembers any good stories about her.

While her professional career has received a lot of coverage, and a number of books have been written about her life in Hollywood and after, there is very little available about her early life. My parents grew up in Cincinnati about the same time. Although my mother never met her, Doris Day was her idol.

She attended Cincinnati's Western Hills High School.Pete Rose later attended that same school. That's about all I can tell you.

Thanks. I have read her autobiography and she says she had no formal education after her car wreck at age 14, so she must have gone there for 7th or 8th grade.

I have no way of knowing for sure, but we grew up in Wilmington and my mom went to Cincinnati with her friends during the early and late fifties. My mom always told me she did not think much of Doris Day because she had been married with kids in Ohio when she ran off and left them to pursue her career. One of the first threads of yours, the one about Swifton Shopping Center, someone mentioned a bar or nightclub where she supposedly performed, you might go back and check.

I was born in 1954 and my mom was born in 1933.

she never ran off and left her kids, since she only had one son, Terry. she started off dancing with partner but her dancing was cut short by a car wreck which injured her legs. while recuperating she started singing. m and it went from there. she sand with the barney rapp band and started touring with bands. Married had one child whom she left wityh family to pursue her career. Married a few more times after that. Her father owned a bar in cincy. It was in her son's terry home in l.a. that the manson family murders were commited...she lives on the monterrey coast in california and has hotel which is pet friendly since she is all into humane treatyment of animals. nice person, great singer.

Family gossip has it that she replaced my grandmother singing for the USO. My grandmother became pregnant and had to quit....or say goes the family tale.

Ok, so I stand corrected. She did not "run off and leave her kids" she "ran off and left her son with relatives". My mom raised three, adopted four, and was foster mother to a bunch more. Different perspectives I guess.

You could go to the neighborhood where she was born. The house Doris Day was born in is down the street from St. Mark Catholic church. I don't know which house it is, but it is either the red brick for sale or the one across the street. The house is on the corner of Greenlawn and Jonathan. Jonathan and Montgomery Road is where St. Mark is located.
