I have lived in Hartwell since 2001 and have NEVER ONCE visited one of the "neighborhood" so called bars on Vine. Instead, our neighbors have gatherings and cook outs, bonfires and holiday celebrations. I love my neighbors so much almost every one of them are invited to my wedding....I not only love the historic charm of Hartwell but I love the people that live in my neighborhood. One thing I say about our house is "you can pick your house, but you cant always pick your neighbors" we were lucky to get a grand slam with both, wonderful old house with a big yard and a bunch of neighbors I am blessed to have in my life. People get out and actually get to know eachother and love to pull out a lawn chair and grab a cold one out of the frig and hang in the back yard more than spending $5 on a beer at a local dive LOL....And technically Hartwell has no bars, the local establishments are located on the west side of Vine street which is technically Springfield Twp and we all know, I dont like to venture outside of Hartwell unless I REALLY have to because everything we need is located IN Hartwell most of the time (Kroger, CVS, Walgreens, Cramer Hardware, Churches, Friends of the Public Library, neighborhood school, recreation center, pool...should I go on or are all you regulars sick of my Hartwell love???)
Enjoy your day all, I have wedding plans to finalize.

... What's weird about this comment is that a lot of suburbanites would find this to be the opposite. I haven't read a sociological study yet on urban environments and neighbor mingling, but I'd venture to say being in an urban environment creates a better (and easier) situation to actually meet the people you live near. i.e. restaurant/bar/museum/proximity options.

When we lived in the Shillito, Towne Properties would hold a monthly social gathering and rent out a restaurant for example and even pay for a couple of drink tickets. A lot of people would actually dread this because we've become so busy as a society, but it was actually packed and created a way to meet people from all over the world. You'd be surprised at the amount of NYC, Chicago, L.A. transplants. We also always met people that transferred here because of work from outside the U.S. As someone that lived in Colerain, I can't see them pulling this off ... especially every month.

Hartwell sounds worth checking out, but I'm not sure where that is and haven't seen many craigslist ads mentioning that neighborhood. Does it get listed under another neighborhood name maybe?

While my boyfriend loves bars (he's a bartender, kinda has to) I am more of a stay home with the dog type person. So a quiet neighborhood would still be a good compromise... as long as it's not like West Chester (am I getting repetitive yet?? lol).

If you all really don't mind giving security opinions... what about this area? I've heard awful things about Walnut Hills but heard East Walnut Hills can be tolerable. I love this house (http://cincinnati.craigslist.org/apa/1756591071.html - broken link), but still, not enough to risk safety.

in the category of urban neighborhoods-that-are-still-actually-urban-and-close-to-downtown, you can't get much better than east walnut hills or down into eden park. the 'prime' area of east walnut hills though is a little farther south. while i would be comfortable and feel safe at the location you sent, based on your criteria, i think you should stay south of taft and east of victory in east walnut hills.

once you evaluate the hood, you might get a better since of if the location you mentioned is adequate for you. or, given a couple of years, that location may be a little different, continuing on the upswing like the rest of the neighborhood

fwiw, i lived at the corner of park and McMillan and enjoyed it very much and that area is quite a bit more dicey.

Went for a drive today in East Walnut Hills to check out that property and another... and wow, Victory is definitely a boundary between comfort and discomfort. It is surprising how you can be on that gorgeous, breathtaking main drag of the neighborhood (approaching that huge church especially), and less than 30 seconds later witness an honest to god drug deal a few blocks over. I really, really wanted to like it there.

I did end up in Mt. Lookout, in Ault Park, and fell madly in love with that area. Too bad for me... Maybe I can find a crummy little place there in my price range, but probably not much else!

victory parkway is known as the boundary. i lived on the 'other' side of the boundary and as you go south towards the park it is nicer and nicer. the biggest problem is the alms building, a massive subsidized housing project (housing for people who are too poor for section 8). if that building were razed, it would be a tragedy, but the area would improve over night. walnut hills around peebles corner is, despite the crime, a very legitimate and in many ways rare community with people who care very much about each other. but the core of it is definitely not for someone used to west chester.

you might find some low rents in linwood or east end. a little rougher around the edges than mt lookout and ault park and somewhat messed up by columbia parkway but it is cheaper

I think you should have ZERO concerns for safety in EWH. I'm kind of lost. Mansions and condos selling (not on the market for, but selling) for $2,000,000 are a pretty big indicator for how dangerous an area is ... correction, how a neighborhood could be perceived as "dangerous" or "safe."
