canada's budget is getting so tight that they're trying to desocialize their health care as much as they can come 2013.

if anything is keeping canada afloat, it's the fact that they rely heavily on natural resources. the cities with the lowest unemployment rates there are oil towns. what's toronto's unemployment rate? around 9%, right?

you can make a case that canada is a little better off than america right now, but that doesn't change the fact that canada still sucks economically and that america has not been practicing at all what we should be economically in order to be better off than canada. america has been doing exactly what i don't want it to do, so boasting how "successful" canada has supposedly been compared to us is pretty pathetic when it's socialistic spending that has put america in the positition we're in debt-wise.

I don't know why you're attacking me for what you perceive as my maple leaf flag-waving. I was simply asking you to substantiate your statement. Before I counter you point-by-point, though, I would ask a couple of questions:

1. You do realize that Ontario is but one of 10 provinces in Canada, right? If you're going to throw out debt figures to support your argument, it would seem fairer to compare things on a national basis.

2. Your health care article from the NY Times is dated 2006. Is that the best you have? Canada is peculiar by not allowing a parallel private system, but that doesn't mean it's getting ready to abandon its public, provincially-led model. If you truly believe that it is, then I'd suggest you need to find other sources of information.

what i'm saying is not that america is better off than canada economically, but that canada is no beacon of an economy. it's better off than america currently but that doesn't take away the fact that canada isn't well off in itself either. this current situation in the states is not a product of traditional american policy, but retardation. we have retards in office. this is not an example of how american economics is a failure, but an example of the retardation we keep voting into office. traditional american capitalism works, it's just that we have retards in office beating it down.

i know that it is not abandoning its entire model. i am not that dumb and not once did i imply that.

Mississippi might be the poorest but they have some of the strongest, most modest down to earth people Ive ever met, and the food is quite darn good.

IDK about conn. must be snobbish! JK

mississippi is not the poorest. the poverty line is too flawed to take seriously. it doesn't adjust average earnings to cost of living of specific areas.

I have to admit MS is a very bizarre place, you feel like you are back in the 1960's when you are there.

yeah, i've been there. i have family in tennessee. my grandpa lives in the house he built with his bare hands in the early 60s. it's a small house, needs some new exterior paint, it's fairly outdated, he's a former mechanic, has old trucks and cars and boats in his yard and even has an old bulldozer in the yard, and he just got his first color tv like 5 years ago.

yet he has over $600,000 in his bank account. you'd think whoever lived in that house was dirt poor. so looks aren't everything. a lot of people down there aren't very materialistic. my grandpa is not materialistic AT ALL.

According to an article from last year, adjusted for cost of living, Maine is the poorest state in the Union, with Mississippi being the fourth poorest. Virginia would be the wealthiest:

Here's the Nest Egg Index, showing that Mississippi is last in savings, etc.

Come on now, it's easily one of the poorest states. Yes, the COL Index is considerably smaller there...but that's because no one has any money.
