Everything I posted is Gov and military web sites. The armed forces are everywhere, and the major hubs are some of the cities you included, but you have to move S.A. way up on your list.

Since Sacramento was left off the list, I asked the OP to calculate the numbers for Sacramento. I figured SAC would rank in the top 20 on some of these lists or just below the #20 spot; therefore, deserving to be mentioned.

On one list, SAC ranked higher than both San Antonio and Jacksonville, not bad considering SACramento lost ALL it’s military installations within the county limits in the mid 90’s.

***Not every single metro/CSA was examined. Only metros/CSAs that had a base of some sort. For instance Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Columbus, Austin, Sacramento, Portland, Orlando, Minneapolis, Buffalo, Indianapolis, and Birmingham are left off the list. It is doubtful that they have really high civilian military populations that would make them "military" cities.

Hopefully this puts any speculations to rest.

Those ranks dont give accurate numbers for San Antonio. Actually they are not even half of San Antonio's totals on a couple of the lists.

Just becasue a city may have a higher population doesn't mean it automatically equates to more veterans or active duty. If a city grew by a million people over night, not one of those people could be Military or a veteran.

My apologies to jsimms3 and to the original poster, california sur, in my above post. I mis-spoke when I said I asked the original poster to calculate the numbers.

I should have said:

Since Sacramento was left off the list, I asked jsimms3 to calculate the numbers for Sacramento.

SweethomeSanAntonio, you keep saying that San Antonio has twice as many this that or the other from what's posted above (numbers taken straight from the military and the Census). If San Antonio's numbers above are wrong, then it could be that every city's numbers are wrong. Other cities could also have more people, and maybe SA would not advance the numbers ranks. Regardless, I did try to find any numbers for SA different from what I posted and I could not. I went to the local paper, and google, and nothing gave me anything different (and aside from the Census I could not find any numbers for GI retirees/civilian veterans). You mind sharing any links? I have yet to hear of anything from you that would indicate San Antonio has twice as many active or retired military personnel than listed above.

I will post a ton of pictures of area military installations, including San Antonio's soon. I must say, that while San Antonio does not have the highest amount of active personnel in the area (compared to VA Beach, SD, and other places), it does have several large bases and large veterans' hospitals. I was impressed. I would bump SA up my list because of this "computer tour" I took. It's just hard to surpass a major naval base when one ship could support 5,000 troops/civilian workers. You put a couple naval bases in a city, and military employment will be much higher than having AFBs or army bases simply because the ships are so much work and so huge. Think about it, naval/amphibious ships transport army, marine, and air force troops and equipment to overseas destinations. They also fit navy personnel. An aircraft carrier is the size of a new Royal Carribean ship (about 1100 feet long and 200 feet wide by 200 feet tall).

Think about how many crew live on that ship. Then think about how many military and civilian personnel maintain and support that ship. Then factor in all of the families. An aircraft carrier could support a 15,000 person town on its own, which is larger than most military bases. There are 11 active carriers in operation in this country (CVS Enterprise is about to be mothballed, though). These carriers are currently split between Norfolk, San Diego, and Seattle, but Jacksonville will be getting the final and newest carrier from Norfolk soon (we just lost a carrier).

This source below has as follows. This is not the stats you have for S.A. Just these bases have over 114,000 Military personel currently not the 37,661 you claim. I'm not including Brooks City Base which is another 6,000 at the aerospace medical school.
Relocating to San Antonio | Military Presence

Lackland 29,100 miltary personel not including familes.

The population of the AFB is approximately 46,000, of which 20,300 are military and 7,800 are civilians. Approximately 17,900 are dependants. Among military personnel, approximately 48% live off-base and 52% live on-base. Lackland consists of 2,105 facilities, 1,300 buildings, 431 family housing units, 731 privatized housing units and 1,315 vehicles. In 2008, the base had an estimated economic impact of $1,913,825,043.

Of the 120 units stationed at Lackland, only 36 are assigned to the 37th Training Wing. The Command’s 433rd Airlift Wing accounts for 22 units. Another 18 units are under the Air Force Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance Agency and the 67th Network Warfare Wing. An additional 18 Air Combat Command units are also stationed at Lackland. The remaining units are within the 59th Medical Wing, the Texas Air National Guard’s 149th Fighter Wing and other tenant units, agencies and centers
General Information
Lackland AFB encompasses 9,797 acres southwest of San Antonio. It is located off of Highway 90 from the east and 410-West from the north or south. Lackland is home to the 37th Training Wing which provides training to enlisted people entering the Air Force, Air Force Reserve, Air National Guard, government agencies and allies. The four primary training functions are basic military, professional, technical and English language proficiency. More than 86,000 students graduate each year and more than seven million airmen have completed training since 1946

FT. Sam 47,200 military personel not including families. As of 2010-2011 military personel will be over 60,000 thanks to BRAC

FSH supports 35 Army, two Air Force, five Navy/Marine, two joint service, seven DoD, five federal, three state and five private organizations. FSH is the fourth-largest employer in San Antonio. The current work force consists of approximately 35,900 military personnel (including active, reserve and National Guard), approximately 8,500 civilians as well as an additional 3,000 contract employees and other workers. Approximately 47,200 Army members reside at FSH. The current number of family members residing on the post is approximately 8,000 and about 113,300 military retirees and family members also live in the area.
All military medical training will be consolidated at FSH with the opening of the Military Education and Training Campus (METC) in 2011. The Navy will move its medical training from three locations and the Air Force will move its training from the Sheppard Air Force Base to FSH. This is expected to increase the student body population by 9,000 and will require an additional support staff of 4,000.

Camp Bullis 11,656 military personel not including families.

As mentioned in the beginning of this chapter, the BRAC will transform FSH, Camp Bullis and its surrounding communities. By 2011, an additional 23 Army, six Air Force and seven Navy organizations will be supported by FSH. During 2006-2008, 1,656 personnel moved to the post. An additional 10,000 new personnel will arrive in 2010-2011, many of whom will be accompanied by their families. To accommodate this dependant population growth, $20 million in funds have been allocated for the construction of a middle school, gymnasium, media center and technology center.

Randolph 12,200 miitary personel not including families.

— General Information
Randolph AFB is located in Universal City, approximately 30 minutes northeast of San Antonio. It is accessible from the IH-35 and I-10 roadways. Randolph is the headquarters of the Air Education and Training Command (AETC), the Air Force Personnel Center (AFPC) and the 12th Flying Training Wing (12 FTW). The 12 FTW headquarters is known throughout the Air Force as “The Taj” because of its similarities in appearance to the Taj Mahal. The 12 FTW is also the host wing for Randolph. Additonally, the AFB is home to the Air Force Manpower Agency, Air Force Office of Special Investigations Field Investigations Region 4 and the Air Force Recruiting Service. Randolph is known as “the Showplace of the Air Force” because of its Spanish Colonial Revival style architecture.

The base employs over 5,700 military personnel and 6,500 civilians. Its economic impact region spans a 50-mile radius and nearly $224 million associated with indirect jobs is generated by the base. Furthermore, it accounts for a total annual payroll of nearly $648 million that is spent in the local community.

LOL, I see you have never come across SHSA's posts before.

She always tries to make SA out to be more than it really is. Her proofs are always messed up quotes written by people from SA or wikipedia.

The claims are always wild.
