In terms of Architecture Detroit's argueably 2nd in the US next to New York, Atlanta comes nowhere close.

A much fairer comparison would be Detroit vs Chicago IMO.

Few cities in North America can compare with Detroit.. maybe old world cities such as Montreal/NY/Boston/Philly, definitely not Atlanta.

I've only heard of the Civil War, but back then it was a town of around 10,000-12,000 people and most buildings were just wood/very small and would have been long replaced by now anyway.

Did something else happen? Urban renewal?
Two fires, and one race riot. Not to mention that keeping old buildings in Atlanta isnt really something that is done around here. Just tear it down and build a new one!!

Yes and no. Downtown suffered the most from urban renewal, but other neighborhoods faired better or weren't touched at all. But as was previously said, pre-Civil war Atlanta was tiny. Up until the 1820s it was a Cherokee and Creek trading post. After the area was depopulated, nothing much happened until 1837 when it was decided that a railroad depot would be there. The Confederates then took advantage of it's strategic location to make it a major railroad terminus and industrial center. That's the city Sherman destroyed. It wasn't until Reconstruction when most of the "old" Atlanta that faced the wrecking balls during Urban Renewal was built. Atlanta was never an Old South city like Savannah, Charleston or New Orleans.

Now as far as what happened to Downtown before and after Urban Renewal, it's best shown in aerials:

Hilarious....Detroit looks like a bigger version of Gary, Indiana.
Nothing remotely pretty about it.

Those urban renewal pictures make me feel queasy. I'm glad to see Atlanta is doing a good job filling it in.

You're either blind, ignorant, or both. Detroit has some absolutely hideous areas. Actually, let me rephrase that: Detroit has many absolutely hideous areas...however they also have some of the finest architecture and monuments the country.

Atlanta isn't horrible, but it's nowhere near Detroit in terms of architectural quality.
