The traffic is really bad from a minutes per mile basis. I live on the far southern edge of Lex and it always take 20 minutes+ to make the 6 mile drive to Downtown. By comparison 20 minutes get you all the way through 15 miles of Louisville. Lex is more compact so the total time to drive through the whole city would be similar to most mid sized metros (Cincinnati, Columbus, etc)
The snooty thing is all relative. A lot of Kentuckians view Lexingtonians have having a "better than you" view of the world - that because they left their small town or industrial Louisville to go to the state's flagship university and now live in an affluent South End neighborhood that they are better than everyone else. A lot of people - but not everyone - really worry about driving the most in vogue $50,000 car and costly new clothes they can find.
I never felt that way about the snootiness until I moved out and realized how modest people can be.
Lexington can be a bit up its own arse, and the traffic is horrid... But it's an alright place. Low crime, cheap, occasionally stuff happens that's fun.
It has a strong conservative element, family values, wide open spaces yet access to all of the amenities, 4 distinct seasons with a long snowy winter and July temperatures in the 70s-80s, all while being highly affordable?
Damn, that's something about SanFran I never knew.
I also didn't know it bordered some of the world's largest freshwater lakes or was in Michigan, Ohio, Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, or the Dakotas :S
Here is a better pick of Grand Rapids...Aka GR...aka Gun Ru Michigan.
Source This pick does not show the density of the older section of downtown....which is the most charming part.
