Austin has a very good live music scene, possibly one of the best.

The club scene is much to be desired though. There are no major clubs, just a bunch of small bars turned into little clubs.

I like Techno and Trance and for that, San Francisco, Dallas, and Chicago are high on the list.
Dallas has always had a very good Electronic Dance Music scene ever since Rave's first originated in the early 90's. The 80's New Wave era which was also hugely popular in Dallas kinda gave birth to that whole underground sub-culture. Club's like the original Starck club is what made Dallas so famous. According to some folks who lived it, Starck was considered the Studio 54 of its time. The club drug Ecstacy was openly sold at the front door & bars before it became illegal. Some claim it even got started there.

I lived in Dallas during the Starck days and it was good .

I do have to say that Houston also had quite a good dance/electronic/industrial scene and the club culture was huge in the 80's/early 90's as well with it's own famous CLUB 6400 (among other great clubs - NRG, Decadance, Xcess, Avalon, Power Tools, Bayou Mama's, Numbers, NRG's, The Lizard Lounge), - Club 6400 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia which also spawned radio wars between top 40 stations 93Q and KRBE (then Power 104) as Power was dance/leaning and would air mixes from the Ocean Club and 93Q tried to top it by airing a dance mix show from Club 6400 7 days a week.
