The only thing Chicago was involved wit in that whole East-West bs was Common dissing Ice Cube and Pac dissing Da Brat on a song.
I think the West had more people involved, cuz New York spent just as much time getting at eachother as they got at the West. You had Raekwon and Ghostface dissing Biggie on Only Built 4 Cuban Linx, Nas went at Biggie on "The Message", Biggie swung at Nas on "Kick in the Door", etc. The West had a couple internal shyt at the time like DJ Quik VS MC Eiht, and Pac dissed Dre a couple times, but it wasnt as bad as East Coast infighting. I dont count Dre VS Eazy E in that era.
Some of the Chicago rappers are going strong right now. Atlanta is also quite popular. But I'm not necessarily a fan of most of their rappers, it's just kind of a different thing going on.
Jay-Z was right to quote on "Death of Autotune".
Drake is pretty good and he has talent, I think Lil Wayne is a bit trashy, IMO too much autotune.
Southern rappers make it way to easy, Florida, T-Pain LOL, Usher...
But anyways back to East & West Coast, Nas & Jay had quite a beef going at each other at that time. I think that relieved some of the tension between East & West coast.
Biggie had a pretty cool thought out image of the West, but there was just way too much retaliation.
I would put them like this
- Tupac number One
- Biggie close 2nd
- Dr. Dre
- Snoop Dogg
I think I kind of liked West Coast a bit more, Ghost Face Killah and a few others like Nas were geniuses, they just needed some beats to make it more sick. West Coast rappers had some great beats man. Dr. Dre always had good ones and Tupac shined in that.
