I can understand pairing up Memphis and Jackson, but is there any reason why Birmingham and Little Rock were paired up? Maybe it should have been Birmingham and Mobile or something. Anyway, I'd probably go with the Memphis/Jackson pairing.

I voted Birmingham and Little Rock, even though the two metros are not on the same level.

Why are Birmingham and Little Rock combined? They are similar in many ways, but have little in common culturally. I perfectly understand Memphis & Jackson being combined though.

Little Rock, Memphis, and Jackson all should be on the same side. Birmingham should have been paired, like someone else said, Mobile or maybe Montgomery or something.

Neither is an option. All of those cities have high crime rates and high poverty rates and are very lacking in amenities for cities their size. Memphis actually has a few attractions but its such a dangerous city it isn't even worth going out in unless you want your car getting broke into. I've been a few times and it feels like the Detroit of the South. Birmingham, Little Rock, and Jackson are not much more than sleepy southern towns with high crime and poverty with little to see or do. There is no money there so what does exist just isn't up to par.

I could say the same for a few neighborhoods here in Charlotte. Obviously that doesn't apply to the entire city, just like it doesn't for Memphis.

For those who keep insiting that Birmingham is on par with Mobile, Montgomery, Jackson and Little Rock need to wake up and get a clue. For starters Bham has a metro population of 1.2 million, none of the other cities mention are not even close to that.

Did you not notice that two 1,000,000+ cities (Memphis and Birmingham) were grouped with two 1,000,000- cities (Jackson and Little Rock). Little Rock is culturally/geographically more aligned with Jackson or Memphis, so it shouldn't be grouped with Little Rock. Montgomery and Mobile (or maybe something in Georgia or the Carolinas) are probably the only other smaller cities that should be grouped with Birmingham.

Even then you have to look at how Birmingham compares to other cities the same size.
