I stand by my opinion. I live in Philly so I know all about Center City, Manhattan is a 1 hr 30 min drive from my house and I've seen so much there, and I spent 3 nights in downtown Chicago last month. It's my observations and my brother 100% agrees. In fact, I went o Manhattan week after I came back from Chicago. My initial observation was "this place is crowded, hot, a bit smelly, and full of concrete...Chicago was more spacious, less congested, more photogenic and more polished". You can't argue that Chicago has done a fantastic job on its lake front.
I grew up in the west so I'm sure what I define as a city is definitely different. Most of the states I have lived in, other than California, are mostly defined as a state with only one large city with the rest of the state dotted with small towns. I'm used to a city having a more spread out open feel.
The picture looks like only homes but there are soccer fields parks, shopping, restaurants mixed in. For example, in my area I live a 1/2 mile from a hospital, shopping mall, a grocery store, park, school, bar, restaurants, beauty salon, etc.
One thing is for sure...Las Vegas from the outside looking in does not look as attractive. I hated Las Vegas before I actually lived here, it's a city you have to live in to appreciate. I moved in February, ripped off my coat and winter clothing and put shorts and a tee shirt on.
Crime: Las Vegas
Skyline: Chicago and its not even close.
Smog City: Unsure, I'd say it may be more prevalent in Chicago given its a much larger city, more manufacturing, and automobiles.
Population: Seriously? What kind of question is this?.. ...Chicago
Area: ?????? What do you mean?
Nightlife: Touristic Nightlife = Vegas / Local Nightlife = Chicago
Attractions: Tourism = Vegas but Museums, Lake Front Activities, Shopping, ect all go to Chicago.
Education: Chicago
Peaceful Suburbs: Tie. Both have very nice areas and terrible areas.
Eateries: This one admittedly is hard. I'm unsure TBH. I'm going to go with Chicago but Vegas offers alot in the food department.
Hotels: Vegas easily
Shops: Chicago easily
This thread could contend for the most unbalanced comparison in the history of CD.
Chicago competes very well at the top of the World Class City list.
Las Vegas is largely a retirement / worker colony for the casino industry, and a vacation destination, and contends only in the Western US with small cities. And not even at the top of that list.
