I like nature but I like Chicago a lot too. And Chicago has a massive pull on peoples decisions as to whats great about Illinois and whats not.

Personally I also like Peoria & Urbana-Champaign too. They're nice places for their size.

And at the end of the day this: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...ois_Center.jpg
^ That is still in the state of Illinois, and has a very strong pull on personal preferences.
You are entitled to your opinion, but I say if you think Illinois is worthy of a favorite all around state, you may need glasses. And a bit more experience with about. 30 states that have far more to offer as a whole than than wannabe NYC...Chicago

1. New York (I am a homer)
2. California (so diverse from LA to beautiful SF)
3. Washington
4. Oregon
5. Colorado (love the landscape throughout the western half
6. New Hampshire (Mom's side of family from there and it is a beautiful state
7. West Virginia (don't know why I have a strange fascination with that state
8. Pennsylvania (have lived there and It's a very cool state)
9. Florida (If it wasn't flat and humid it might make top seven)
1o. Maine (beautiful state)

10 least favorite states:

1. Virginia (I have lived there and I hated it. Lot's of segregation, sterile, boring, enough said) I lived in there better area too Hampton roads area
2. Ohio ( I like Cincinnati and Columbus, but the rest of the state I hate)
3. Georgia (don't know why, just find it depressing) and very hot humid states scare me. I hate humidity, besides florida for some reason.
4. Alabama (see above)
5. Mississipi (see above)
6. Idaho- Just seems bland
7. Indianapolis (same reason as above)
8. Texas (never found the fascination. I'm not crazy about the landscape or any city in Texas)
9. Indiana (no significant cities stand out and very flat-farm land) Although I respect midwest states-thank you farmers of America. You are not appreciated enough.
10. Kansas (been through there many times. The topography sucks and look at number 9 for the rest).

From the ones I could most live in. Usually I'm not a fan of states- I don't think of them as anything great compared to cities & conurbations.

Favorites:
1. New York (Via New York City!)
2. Virginia (Where I live now- homer answer)
3. Maryland (Our brothers across the Potomac)
4. Illinois (Via Chicago)
5. Florida (Via Miami)
6. Arizona (Via Tucson, Flagstaff, Sedona, Montezuma's Castle)
7. North Carolina (I love Asheville (never been though) but the other cities don't do it for me- the state is so stunning though)
8. Colorado (Via Denver & Aspen)
9. Washington (state) (Via Seattle)
10. Texas (Via Austin, South Padre, & San Antonio/with lifelong friends in Dallas & Houston)
11. California (Via San Diego, Bay Area, & Los Angeles)
12. Michigan (Via Ann Arbor, Detroit suburbs, & Upper Peninsula)
13. Massachusetts (Via Boston (I like Boston more than I like Massachusetts- Boston's a top 5 city for me))
14. Oregon (Via Portland)
15. Georgia (Via Atlanta)
16. Minnesota (Via the Twins)
17. Wisconsin (Underrated, Via Madison & Milwaukee)
18. Nevada (via Las Vegas (never been though)

Sorry, I couldn't stop it at 10. I needed more slots to finish it of all the states I could ever live in.

Least favorites:
- None

Would like to see Utah, Nevada, Alaska, Hawaii, & Tennessee (besides Memphis) one day.

Indianapolis isnt significiant? Its a metro area of nearly 2 million and its one of the fastest growing cities in the midwest. Plenty of history and culture as well.
