It's very strange to me. I thought "soda" was a coastal thing. And I thought us Midwesterners said POP!
I see the southern influence in this Midwestern city. This has been discussed quite a bit on forums such as this website. But is there an East or West Coast influence too? Why do these Midwesterns say so-duh?
And yeah, areas of Southern IL also say So-duh and root for the Saint Louis Cardinals..
It's not on the map, but a lot of people in Memphis say "soda" too. Of course, "Coke" would be first, but "soda" is second, and not unheard of. That's what I grew up saying and I was born and raised here. "Pop" is unheard of though.
How could it be "wrong" if it is based on direct responses from folks in the given areas of the country?
You don't have to take my post so seriously. I've lived where I live for 40+ years, and I have always heard "soda." A lot of Wisconsin says soda, obviously, but the area where I live is blue. That's weird to me, because I always hear soda, and never hear it called pop. Not a big deal, and neither is wrong or right. I'm just making an observation, and I know what I hear.

Chill a bit. I wasn't doubting your word nor experience. As it is, I should have mentioned that yes, there are going to be anomalies all across the board. For instance, I know some folks in Texas who swear they never heard "coke" used as the generic for soft-drink. I find such almost impossible to believe, but I don't think they are lying about it! LOL
The map is 7 years old - things can change in 7 years.
