Yes the Indiana plate IS ugly. I saw several on I-75 driving between Macon and Atlanta yesterday (one of the benefits of living in GA is that you pretty much see every East Coast plate on a regular basis heading bac and forth to FLA). The Indiana plates have several decals on the including a strip across the top I think that IDs the county. And I'm not sure what the emblem is on the left? It is also very dark blue and hard to read unless you are right up on it.

Isn't that the point of a license plate? Or would it be better is it said "California.gov Visit Sunny California Now" along with some random political garbage?

There was a time when most all license plates had three things on them. 1. The name of the state. 2. The year. 3 The license number. I kind of miss those days.

They are just numbers on placards with usually some identifier of the country name"

California isn't the ONLY state to do that (WA, VA, AK, and others still have registration stickers on their plates). Seems like a pretty petty thing to pick on, especially since I've been in many car washes before and its NEVER come off (of course, I always cut the sticker once I attach it to the plate, so not ALL of the piece comes off).

What I've noticed lately is that more and more states have switched from 6 digit plates to 7 digit plates (CA did this back in 1981, but still has ONLY managed to use 60% of all possible allowed combinations).
I've always wondered by California doesn't add more letters to the series once the 1ABC234 series runs out, instead of considering adding another digit. I mean, if you have letters and numbers, there are 36 different digit combinations, as opposed to 3 26 (A-Z) letter combinations and 4 10 (0-9) number combinations.
Texas added 7 digits not too long ago. We ran out of 6 digit combos.

Wow, did someone in the crappy Gov. Paterson administration design that god-awful looking plate? Shame to see a great-looking one disappear.....

California has too many things that represent it, that it can't all be included in the plate. One thing alone can't represent California as a whole because it's got so much.

I like that the plates are clean looking an not cluttered.

My other favorites are Nevada and Arizona
