saying LA is the capital west of the mississippi is hard to swallow when LA has so much strong competition from within its own state. It does not rule the way Chicago rules the midwest or the way ATL rules the SE.
I would not say Boston is the capital of the NE tho. NY and Philly are strong are up there too

Yes.
At most, LA is the capital for southern California and maybe the southwest and Central California. This is true for almost any major city as regional centers have become stronger and stronger. The US simply does not have a primate city in the mold of the UK or France--nor does it have primate cities for regions as vast as "west of the mississippi." Even for the smaller region of the West Coast, there is Seattle for the Pacific Northwest, SF/Bay Area for northern California, and a possible argument for SD being separate enough to not be much within LA's sphere.

Do you really believe Houston will outright pass LA? In certain terms it already does, but I have a hard time seeing this happen overall.

If you notice Ive toned down on my hatred for LA, because what is point of hating place where millions live that I do not know? I think LA has many problems but it is my judgment to stay away from places I feel unfit. I admit to having done in thread but I am giving LA benefit of doubt as it is large and great city to many.
This kid (californio) goes through thread basing every opinion off liberal and conservative, if you read his post he has issues accepting faults in California. Arnold is not republican enough? Does not matter, republican is still republican, he contradicts himself and goes thread to thread taking it over the top as if he has experienced life around him. Can he tell the liberal people in Detroit who have been shot at, lost their homes and job, have to move homeless shelter confidently what he says on site? No is answer.
As for Houston passing LA, it can in many ways but overall I do not think that is Houstons goal, the city is on good course but to early to say what happens.

In population..probably not. But in overall economic power and importance, definitely. People are fleeing California while Texas is one of the fastest growing states.

I see it happening on economy, but LA has so many people right now, and the Inland Empire is so close. I don't think Houston population wise is gonna catch up anytime soon

This really made me LOL.
NYC is not only the most important city in USA, but it's the most important city in the WORLD. With Londom being the only other city with us.
Your definition of "influence" is contemporary and that's why people laugh at L.A because the "facts" you guys bring to the table have no substance.
It's mostly L.A natives/people who want to live there/people who just love that place (which there's nothing wrong with that) who believes L.A has an influence on everything and dominates anything. Ha your post made my day.
Its a GREAT American city, but when you say in the world?! HA It's not even on Par with Chicago.

Seriously. Go over to international forums/Sites or discussions where people (who aren't for L.A/Cali) mention World Class Cities.
L.A is hardly/never mentioned.
And I keep saying L.A because that's what some of you think defines a state. It's your most important area, right?
