Having lived in the KC area and currently living in Indy, I'd say these two are awfully close in terms of economy and family. I could be happy in either community. Indy may deserve a slight edge due to its proximity to more cities than KC, but only if that matters to you.
While I pretty much slammed KC in the Minneapolis vs Kansas City thread, I don't think Indy holds a candle to KC.
Metro KC just offers far more to do and see. The urban core is much larger and has more character, KC has MLB (they suck but it's still MLB). The topography of KC is much more attractive too. I even think the suburbs of KC are much better. I know people that moved to Indy from KC with the NCAA and none of them like Indy better, but you gotta go where the job takes you.

Well considering the 3 hour drive to Chicago the nations 3rd largest city that is a bonus along with Lake Michigan the perfect ocean substitute.
Plus Indy is within a days drive to 75% of the US population.
For its physical appearance and some topography, Kansas City.
For its location, Indianapolis.
It all depends on where you want to be able to drive with your car.
I'll keep it open in case anyone else wants to read up on comparisons between the two cities, but please elaborate with details on various aspects of each city as the OP left out A LOT of details.
