Outside the US, the United States is New York, Miami, Detroit, and Hollywood. Foreigners are as unfamiliar with the states as we are with their provinces.
Canadians being an exception, since they are so close and culturally incredibly similar.
not true. NYC, LA, Chicago, SF, DC, LV would be the prominent cities.
NYC - obvious financial capital
LA - Hollywood
DC - Capital
SF - Rolling Hills, Cable Car
Chicago - skyscrapers, snow, cold, The T
LV - Casinos, Gambling, Agassi
most of it as a result of movies.
Detroit, Miami would not even be thought about unless you remind them

Ohio-Cleveland or Cincinnati, sometimes Columbus, even though I have a great aunt who lives an hour south in Chillicothe!
Pennsylvania-Philly easily, Pittsburgh sometimes, and that's b/c of the Steelers!
Tennessee-Nashville, Memphis sometimes and Knoxville, b/c that's my mother's birthplace!
