San Diego doesn't have a CSA, they don't get any more extra commuters to have one, but Denver does. And it is indeed larger than San Diego as an overall metro, if you go by CSA.

Denver 3.1 million and growing at twice the rate of san diego. And that is still old data. I realize that sd could claim tijuana in the true sense of a urban area, thus being much larger! I suppose there are many different ways to skew the numbers to make either Denver or sd bigger. Depends on if it benefits your argument or not.

My vote goes to Denver. It is the capital of its subregion and is doing some amazing things. But, an honorary mention goes to my city of Charlotte.

Denver is "the city" for an absolutely huge area of the country. Not a lot of people but still a very large area. In fact it's really a major city if you divide the country into areas based on city influence. All of the other cities on this list play 2nd or 3rd fiddle to another city in their region.
